Welcome Home, Carolyn! Sorry you had such a hard time getting back home. Good idea to curl up with a good trashy novel to pass the time! Wishing you all the best!
Everyone has their own personal views on the subject of having an amnio or not. We opted for the amnio, because despite all the prenatal tests you can have, none of them can tell you definitely if your child will be born with a genetic defect or not, they will only give you a risk assessment, where the amnio will give you an answer. For us, having that peace of mind was important. Our donor, although not yet 35, was still 30 and DH is 50, so the combination of the ages did pose a risk, according to my ob/gyn. So, if there was going to be a problem, we wanted to be prepared and informed.
Of course, we were worried about the miscarriage risk, but for a singleton, it is actually quite low and took all precautions. In the end, I am glad we did it. I think if one is pregnant with twins, the risk is different.
We've had nothing but incredibly positive and encouraging feedback regarding our news as well. If people are surprised, it is probably more because of my age, and why didn't we do this sooner, and not because we waited so long to say anything. As most of my friends and all of my family live far away, no one has even seen me in ages --
Everyone has their own way of approaching things. We just opted to wait till we felt we were at the right moment.
Sorry for the long post about me --
Do hope everyone is doing well! It is going to be a very exciting couple of weeks here!
