Terrified of IM shots! Help!

Postby tigersuz22 » Fri Oct 31, 2008 6:50 pm

Hi everyone,
We're less than a week away from ER and close to starting IM shots. Our sub-q shots have been a piece of cake and any other IM shot that I have administered (like flu, tetanus, etc.) doesn't hurt in the least bit... but I'm terrified of these. I trust my husband immensely - he's been GREAT with the sub-qs, but because the medication is thicker and it's a huge needle, I can't get past my fear.

Any advice?? I was thinking of having our nurse draw a circle where they should be injected so it can minimize any errors... and pain!

Thank you all!

Just always remember it is not the needle that hurts. It is the medication. Some meds hurt more than others. If you inject a refrigerated medication while it is still cold and/or thicker it will hurt more. Make sure you warm it up first. That will thin it out and it will not hurt that much.
