Newbie w some questions

Postby JennLB25 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:51 pm

I'm new here and just want to share my story to date. :)

My DH and I are just now looking into doing IVF. I don't know how long everything takes from your first consult appointment with an RE till you actually get to start the IVF process, but we will be seeing the RE within the next 2 weeks for the first consult.

My DH and I have been married 11 years (as of Sept. 13, 2008) and have been trying for children the whole time. I am 34 (in October) and my DH is 33.

We did some infertility testing about 5 or 6 years ago, but the RE wasn't very informative. I think I remember reading in some of my papers that DH has 1% normal morphology, low mobility and low count. They think my tubes are damaged. So, it seems that we may both be the cause for our infertility.

My husband's employer was just bought-out a year or so ago and I just decided, since our insurance changed, to check into whether or not the new insurance covers IVF....and thanks be to GOD!!!!, it does offer $20,000 for infertility which includes all testing, corrective surgery and IVF, so we have only one shot at this).

We weren't able to afford IVF without the help from insurance. And adoption costs are WAY TOO HIGH. The cheapest I found locally was about $20,000.

I'm really nervous about getting the new tests done. It's been about 5 or 6 years and I am getting older. I'm nervous about how these new tests will come out and what they'll show. This process is so emotionally overwhelming. It worries me to get back into actively TTC. It does wreak havoc on your nerves and your relationship.

It really does help to be able to talk to people who are going through the same stuff.

Do you guys suggest IVF with ICSI? Do you think that would help our chances? Do you think that would be the only way to get those eggs fertilized?

Much love,
Jenn

Welcome. That's great that your insurance covers that much of the cost. My insurance recently changed too because my company was bought. I get $10K coverage. My DH and I are doing IVF #3. Yes it is very expensive and my parents have helped us greatly with the cost. However, due to the cost this is our last chance too.

First question: How long does it take? It depends on if you are doing IVF or ICIS and if you have been to the doctor to do initial testing. In my experience they do an ultrasound to make sure there are no cysts, blood work for hormone levels. After that I had to wait for AF. After AF i took 3 weeks of BCP. After that it is another month of various meds. Then you take your last HCG shot and 2 days later is the ER. Then you will either have a 3 or 5 day ET. Then 2 weeks for the pregnancy test.

I think the first time it was about 8 weeks or so. The second time it was slightly shorter because no initial testing.

This time no BCP pills so just 4 weeks of shots and then ER and ET.

It really depends on what the doctor needs to do.

Second question; IVF or ICIS? I have no experience with ICIS but I would guess that if your DH has low mobility it may work better with IVF. Again just a guess

Good luck with everything,

Amanda

Hi amanda
- if your DH has low count they will probably recomend IVF with ICSI as this produces better results as sperm is injected direct to egg - and they pick best ones from sample.

On my first cycle - retireieved 3 eggs - one not viable 0 but both others fetilised with ICSI, unfortunately did not get pregnant, on 2nd cycle - 5 eggs retrieved and all fertilised with ICSI - but again did not get BFP

Am sure Re will discuss with you what is best for you - but my DH has low count and thats what they recommended for us

Good luck

Thanks girls for your replies.

Good luck to both of you on your IVF cycles.

I don't know how you guys do it though, more than one IVF I mean. The disappointment after the first not working, and the cost of IVF, would be enough for me to want to quit. I say that now, but we'll see after our first IVF if I still feel the same. :)

Here's to BFP's all the way around for all of us!!!!

Good luck guys.
