Looking for Advice and Support. New to IVF.

Postby mandolin » Sat Oct 04, 2008 11:47 pm

Hello everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself to the board. I am 35 with a 4 year old daughter and had a miscarriage this past march. After seeling a fertility specialist, they recommended Clomid I took day 3 testing 2 months in a row and my results were not good. The first month my FSH was 3.6 and my Estrodial was 375. The second time my FSH was 26, and my Estrodial was low (not sure what is was exactly) I have not seen the doctor since my last test results, just found out from the nurse 2 days ago. She said my next step may be IVF. I'll just have to wait and see. I am in total shock and have been a mess since finding out. If anyone has any advice, good or bad, please let me know. Everything I have been researching online has been depressing (at least regarding my FSH).

Thanks to all.

Hello Mandolin,

We are neighbors. I live outside of Dayton, Ohio actually in Springboro, if you have ever heard of it. I understand your frustration. I just started my IVF cycle in September. I had be regulated on birth control pills for weeks prior to the stimulation medications, which I didn’t like the hormonal effects. Then I start Lupron injections (used to suppress your hormones to make sure you don’t ovulate early) and then next I started the stimulation injections on 9/25. IVF is not that bad. The only thing I didn't like was the side effect of the injections but I took them at night so it was not bad at all. Towards the end of the stimulation of my follicles my abdomen became very distended and sore but Tylenol really helped out. Your office staff will be there every step of the way so you will feel very informed and we are here for you so you will not feel alone. Just because your FSH was low than high doesn’t mean you can’t use your own eggs. Stay positive…!

My husband and I have been married for 8 years but together for 9 years and we have been trying to have a successful pregnancy since we have been together. I have had 1 miscarriage and 1 ectopic pregnancy so I am praying my IVF works on the first attempt. Today was my egg retrieval day and maybe Friday or Sunday will be the embryo transfer. Please stay in touch and update me on your progress…!

Hi Mandolin-
I hope the meeting with your doctor goes well. I'm glad you found these message boards... I've been ttc for 4 years and the women you talk to on here really help motivate you! If you do start an IVF cycle feel free to join one of the threads under the IVF discussion. Though I've done 5 cycles with Clomid and insemination, 3 cycles shots with insemination, this will be my first IVF cycle starting at the end of the month. So we should stay in touch. Good luck!

Hello Barb D,

Good luck on your ER on 10/13. It sounds like you have a lot of follicles that will be available. They retrieved 11 follicles from me on 10/7 and thus far (10/11), I have 8 follicles that are progressing to the blastocyst stage. ET is scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) at 10am. I am getting a massage in a few hours to make sure I am nice and relaxed for the ET.

Good luck to everyone,

Angela

Evening everyone,

I have a question????? They took 19 follicles out on Monday 10/13 at least that is what the RN told me when I called, but she didn't tell me anything else about it she just say to relax and sleep. I am not sure I like that answere since this is my first time doing this I guess I was expecting a little more than just sleep and relax. Today is Wednesday and I don't know if I should call the office. Does anyone have any advice for me :(

I figure your doctor would've discussed a plan (ie. whether to grow the embryos for 3 days or 5) and will keep you updated on ET date. But to be honest, if it was me, I'd call... It can't hurt. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hello BarbD,

I would absolutely call. You are supposed to be updated everyday as to your embryos progress. It will be hard to determine until day 2, definitely by day 3, which day will be your ET. How it was explained to me, by day 3 if there are 6 or more embryos still progressing to the blastocyst stage then your ET will probabaly be day 5 but if you have less then 6 then it will probably be day 3. They also make their decision by looking at the cells to see if they can determine which ones look "healthy" or lack fragmentation.

I would call and remind them that this is your first cycle and you would like more education regarding your treatment plan. After all, you are the customer and its your body...!

Keep us posted!

Thank you all for the advice. I did talk with them and I am going to wait my ovaries were very swollen and I finally stop having pain this week. As it turns out I also got AF so hopefully either Nov or Dec we will do the ET. Keep you all posted.

Hi Jenn-
I started BCPs on 10/24 and my doctor said its to prevent us from ovulating... because atleast in my case I can't start stims until mid-Nov (for insurance approval reasons). So I guess the pills will keep me in check until I start Lupron and Gonal F. In the meantime I have to have a saline ultrasound on Nov 5 to check the health of my uterus. Then my IVF cycle gets the green light.
What is your plan of attack? Since it looks like our cycles are just days apart we should def keep in touch. :)
Good luck.
