IVF Decisions

Postby ash0415 » Fri Aug 13, 2010 3:53 pm

Hello all! I'm getting ready to start my first IVF cycle. I've done 7 cycles of IUI with none working. I won't actually begin anything until September, but am still a little worried about my decision. My biggest concern is the left over embryos (if I have any). I know we can freeze them, but I also know there's a chance they won't survive if frozen then unfrozen. Did any of you have the same concerns? What made you decide to go through with the cycle?

Good Afternoon Ash,
At our clinic the fee for freezing embryos is refundable. So if none of the left over embryos are viable for freezing we can get that money back. This cycle we had 8 left over. Before ET DH and I discussed what we would do with extra embyos if we had more then we could possibly use. I'm not sure how I feel about about donating them, cross that bridge when I get there. 1 arrested and 3 of them were pretty fragmented on day 3 (ET) so I doubt they made it to day 5. Find out if any of them were viable to freeze tomorrow. FET is cheaper then a fresh cycle so if some make it that gives us a more affordable option in the future. Something to think about.

Thank you Heidi. I'm sure I'll feel differently once I get to that point, but now there is so much to consider before actually starting the process. I want to be prepared though so I'm trying to do as much reading and research as I can.

I am going through my first IVF cycle now. We just had our transfer on Monday 8/16. Its quite a thorough process and the clinic made us feel very comfortable.
I have to admit, leading up to day of retreival the injection weren't bad at alll. I had no side affects. However, after the transfer I was put on progrestrone which I hear is pretty standard and I have felt lousy....bloating, nasea and tired. From what I read, these are pretty typical side affects so I am trying to keep busy and get through it.

We had 12 follilces retreived, however only 8 were viable. Within the three days of fertilization 6 eggs continued on however by the third day, the day of transfer we only had 2 that were mature enough to transfer. We are waiting to hear about two others, if they were mature enough to freeze.
We selected this option as a back up to ease the process the 2nd time around if we were not successful. We decided not to donate them because we didnt want to risk having a person in the future come back and say "Hey you are my Mom and Dad" If we are successful this time, we will find out on 8/27 and will discard the frozen embryos.

I wish you all the best of luck in September.

Hi, This is my first time in a forum. I had my embryo (2) transfer on 8/14 and will find out if successful on 8/25. This is our first IVF attempt. Your story is so similar to mine. We conceived our son naturally (he is 5 now). Our infertility is undiagnosed. I just turned 39 and had we felt like we had to try everything possible to give him a sibling. I too found the injections to be ok. Post egg retrieval I felt awful, so bloated it was like I was going to explode. Thankfully I feel much better now. The stress of waiting for results is difficult. We chose not to tell anyone that we were doing IVF so I've felt alone (except for a supportive spouse). The progesterone is mimicking many pregnancy symptoms so I've given up trying to determine if I feel anything. I try tell myself to not think about it. Good luck. I hope to hear if you were successful. Nicole
