New to IVF - My Story

Postby KimKlip71 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:00 pm

Hi,
I have seen infertility and pregnancy message boards all over the internet, but really need to be more involved now that I have a story to share. I am very fortunate to have a four year old daughter that was conceived naturally, on the second month of trying and had a healthy pregnancy with a few small bumps along the way due to my blood pressure.

When my daughter was around two, approaching three (July 2009) my husband and I started trying to conceive our second child. We were able to conceive the first month, but had a cheimcal pregnancy that ended at six weeks. We were told to wait one month and try again, in which we did and became pregnant again to have the same thing happen all over again, another chemical at six weeks and both times I was on progesterone suppositories.

So we took some time off, I saw a regular endocrinologist to get my thyroid working well. At that time he diagnosed me with possible PCOS and put me on Metformin. So starting in June of 2010 we started trying again. Month and month went by and nothing happened, which really made me think something had changed since we were able to conceive so easiliy in the past. In December of 2010 we did some infertility tests to find my husband had 12% normal sperm morphology and I have a blocked tube on the right as the PCOS.

So we did meet with a fertility specialist that was planning on doing a procedure to open my tube until he realized I was 39 and not 29. When hearing I would be turning 40 in June he immediately jumped to IVF. We did try to conceive naturally one more time in which surprisinly, just ten days ago I got a BFP on a pregnancy test and immediately went in for bloodwork to find that my hcg dropped from the first bloodtest to the second 48 hours later...another chemical.

So I have been prescribed birth control pills. I have another HSG scheduled for Monday with my fertility doctor (even though i just had one done two months ago) and I have to schedule a nurse teach session for my husband and myself to learn to administer shots. I feel this is my last chance with my age to have a second child and bless my daughter with a sibling. She really wants to be a big sister. I understand how blessed I am to have a child in the first place and don't take that for granted, but I really want to be able to fulfill her wish of being a big sister.

I'm hesitant with the whole IVF procedure because of the emotional "mind games" I know I will play with myself. I am very analytical and think through everything many different ways. It will be hard to take the time off from work for my appointments, but have the support of my co-workers and school principal to do that. I am also fortunate to have great health insurance that will cover most of the process. I am most apprehensive about going through more loss or the possiblity of multiples.

I think that about sums up my story. Glad to be on here and to meet everyone! Kim
