New member doing second round of IVF with ICSI

Postby sgeiger16 » Sat Mar 04, 2006 4:44 pm

Hello Everyone. I'm new to this website. Well actually, during my first attempt at IVF with ICSI I wasn't registered but was reading your experiences. Let me tell you, I was very relieved to read that others were experiencing a lot of the same symptoms as me. Anyways, here is my background: My DH and I had been ttc for 13 mos. We saw a fertility specialist (just a PA, not MD) and because I had a healthy medical history she decided to test my DH's sperm. To make a long story remotely shorter we found out that my DH was born with Cystic Fibrosis therfore, was born without a vas deferens. We were told the only way we would have a child is IVF with ICSI as long as he was producing sperm. In Dec 2005 my DH had a biopsy done on his scrotum and we found out he is producing "tons of mobile" sperm. Later that month we had a consultation with a (i don't know the abb...) fertility specialist and began the process of an IVF cycle. I had a hysteroscopy Jan. 9 b/c my doc thought I had a fibroid in my uterus (seen during a Saline Sonogram) but found out it was just a build-up of tissue. I did have some unexpected scar tissue removed (D&C) during my hysteroscopy also. I started BCP Jan. 1 to Jan. 25. I started Lupron injections Jan. 22 (.10 cc in AM) and then began my stim meds Feb. 3 (Lupron in AM-.05 cc, Menopur in AM-1 vial, Follistim in PM-150). At my Day 3 (of stim meds) ultrasound and bloodwork my doc was nervous b/c my estradial levels were high (87). By Day 5 of stim meds my E2 levels were still high (321) but I had only produced three measurable follicles so far. Went back Day 6 and had five measurable follicles and my endo lining was at an 8! By Day 8 I had six measurable follicles and my endo was an 11! By Day 9 one new measurable follicle (13 mm) but the other six follicles were measuring between 21 and 22 mm. My endo lining went down to a 9, however. I took my HCG that night. ER was scheduled for Feb. 13. They retrieved six follicles but only four contained eggs. They injected sperm (ICSI) into all four but we found out only ONE fertilized. ET was scheduled for Feb. 16 for the one little guy. It was a good quality embryo though (8 cell, grade 1). After 48 hrs of bed rest and after my 2 ww was over (Feb. 27 test date) unfortunately we had a BFN!! The little guy didn't make it. So because we didn't have any embryos to freeze we now have to start back at square one (with the exception that my the clinic has 5 vials of my DH's sperm). Neither of our insurances cover IVF so we spent roughly $14,000 for a BFN!! We now have a follow-up meeting with our doc to discuss our future options scheduled for March 23. We plan on doing another cycle but are concerned and nervous we won't have embryos to freeze again. My boss' daughter works at our clinic so she has been a good support. She told me I may be able to get in with the March-April cycles (there were four openings as of yesturday). She said she'd talk with my doc on Monday to make sure that's okay and hopefully get me started on BCP again right away since my cycle Day 1 was March 3 (After being off of progesterone in oil injections for five days!) Whew! That's my first IVF cycle in a nutshell! I'll keep you all posted of when I am able to start my next cycle!

Hi 032323,

Yes, apparently I can start so soon. My clinic says it's okay to proceed with the next cycle as long as I've had one normal AF. I was a little surprised as well (i was expecting to have to wait 2-3 mos.). Even though I do not have my follow-up the RE until the 23rd of March, they are still having me start BCP tomorrow. On Monday, the nurse said she would give my chart to the RE for review to decide the next protocol. The nurse said most of the April cycles won't start stim meds until around April 3 and ER April 12 so I really will have AF twice between my first and second attempt at IVF/ICSI....I am praying it works next time as it will be our last chance for awhile (PMA, PMA, PMA). Hope this info helps you.

Hey Caz,

Thank you! I haven't started the stim meds this cycle (probably will around the first part of April). I guess you could say I am an average?? responder to stim meds. The first cycle I produced only seven mature follicle by the retrieval but I was on the lowest dose of meds possible (1 menopur, 150 follistim). I'm HOPING the next cycle RE will up my meds A LOT so I produce more like 20 follicles like he was hoping I would the first time! Right now, my worry is that he won't up my meds enough....guess I'll find out what he says on the 23rd!!! I think the wait to start the next cycle is worse than the 2ww!!! When is your follow-up scheduled?

Hi Sgeiger

When I stim I have only been taking menopur - 8 ampoules per day!! the top dose!! But i am 43! and first 3 attempts only produced 1 egg of only 1 attempt went to transfer but BFN!! 4th attempt was a lot better - had 3 good size follies in each ovary but on egg transfer could only get to 1 ovary because blood vessals were covering one ovary - so ended up with 3 eggs. 2 fertilised and were returned 2 days after collection (1 grade 1.5 and 1 grade 2 really good embryos) but - unfortunately BFN again.

What is the follistim for as I thought menopur was to stim fsh and lh??
Although I know t/ment is completely different in the States.
