icsi first attempt - zero fertilization

Post by bunny2tot » Tue May 06, 2008 1:46 pm

Hello newbie here, hoping someone might have some advice on our situation.

We have just had our first icsi cycle (no previous ivf attempts). I produced 10 supposedly healthy eggs - none of which fertilised. We were told that this is extremely rare and that our clinic have never seen anything like it before. My dh does did have a low sperm count 14 ml, and high abnormal forms(76%) but the clinic didnt think there would be any problem as there were plenty of healthy looking sperm to select from.

Its really hard to know what to think especially when told this has never happened before with a sperm count at this level. Clearly we both devastated and would love any advice. Are we really alone with this experience? Is it worth trying again?

Bunny - I am so sorry to hear that none of your eggs fertilized! I wish I had some insight on the "how" or the "why"...but I don't! I definitely think you should try again, though! So many people are successful on their second or third tires...don't give up because of one set back! Keep your head up! My prayers are with you and your DH!

Hi bunny,
I don't have any insight as well because I'm a first timer too. I just wanted to offer you some support and perhaps one idea as a suggestion. Perhaps you could go to a different clinic for your new round, it might give you more hope for a different outcome. Just a thought. Good Luck, I'm sorry for your frustration experience. I hope you'll have success in the future.

I'm so sorry, thats a real disspointment. I agree with SDtrying......maybe try another cinic. The skill and ability of the embryologists plays a mojor part in your success, maybe shop around a little and check out success rates. It definitely sounds really unsusal to not have fertilization with ICSI, that would make me a little suspicious of the embryologist.

I wanted to thank you for your time and words of advice and encouragement and I wish you first timers all the luck.

Kery - I noticed that you decided to abandon icsi and go for iui afterwards. Is this something you would suggest? Any advice truelly appreciated. We are trying to decide what to do next.
Thanks

It happens from time to time. Not sure how often, maybe around 1% of cycles. Not common, but certainly not unheard of.

Bunny:
This happened to us in our first cycle. I would reccomend double and triple checking that the embryologist actually did ICSI (ours didn't read the chart, and didn't do ICSI even though we were there for male IF). Then I would consider changing clinics. If you have male IF, I do not think IUI would make sense for you. IMHO.
Good luck..you will be pg!

Firstly thankyou to all of you for replying. I feel like I am losing my mind here and just hearing your comments really really helps.
Kim - I am just absolutely dumbfounded. It had crossed my mind that they may just not have done it.. but thought it was me being silly. Its absolutely unbelievable. I will definately ask this question when I go next. I am also thinking about changing clinics.
Thankyou for sharing your experience with me.

I am wondering what causes low fertilization rates when ICSI is used. Is it egg or sperm problem. No one ever seems to know much about sperm. Anyone ever been told anything? They just keep saying do ICSI.

Hi.maybe because the number of eggs mature are less and there is a 5% chance of eggs being damaged during the icsi, when injecting the sperm.

On my 1 attempt i had 6 eggs and zero refertilization but we did IVF not ICSI
