Post by Ghost »

I thought your reply was in line and the truth. I had a friend with OHSS, hospital for over a week. You shouldn't beat yourself up. Good answer. Wish I could send you all my records and you could figure out why I only got ONE Grade B-, 6 cell embie!

We appreciate you on this board!

Oh Ghost! Your cheating on us and posting on another board! Hehe...I am just kidding...

I read your response to their discussion and I absolutely in no way think you were too harsh. Hopefully, they will appreciate your honest and knowledgeable answer to a very serious topic. OHSS is horrible and people should not take it lightly, and for a Dr to risk the chance of one of his patients getting that sick is absurd, borderline unethical.

As I have posted on here numerous times, I was one of the OHSS patients who was hospitalized for over a week with a serious case of OHSS. I seriously wanted to die. It was to date, the worse thing I've ever been through in my life, including a natural childbirth! You were not too harsh because it is a very serious thing. Aside from the horrid pain and fluid gathering around and on all of my organs, I went on to need Heparin shots for several weeks due to the higher risks of blood clots--frightening! Quite a high price my body paid for my sweet little son; but now, it's worth it!

Ghost - I don't think your post was harsh at all. You got to the point and explained how serious OHSS is. I was hospitalized for 3 days with OHSS (should have been longer - stupid insurance) and Sarah is right - that was the worst pain I had ever felt in my life. And any chance to avoid OHSS is a HUGE plus.

Ghost - it was a good answer. She didn't seem to "dispute" your facts, just that the protocol didn't work for her. But like she said, each protocol is different for everyone, and the ones that worked for her may not work for the person asking the question. Therefore, you gave good facts and data to give the original person something to think about and talk to her RE about.

Also, I think you could have been a little bit STRONGER on the dangers of OHSS. The fact the RE made it sound OK because it is "impossible to avoid" is actually scarey. Seems it is of minor concern to him. Can we say "Quack, Quack !!" or just damn lazy to work on it !!

Thanks for the support.

OHSS really bugs me. The methods for avoiding it are in print but largely ignored.

There is no good reason to put a patient through that.

No definitely not too harsh. You gave them excellent information. Its a shame the one doctor said it can't be avoided so may as well hyperstim...I would switch doctors if I was told that.

I do not have this problem, but a friend was at serious risk. Her doctor kept her doses super low to avoid OHSS and she wound up only producing 4 eggs, but that led to 4 embryos and her baby after just one round. She only put back 1 of her 4 excellent quality embryos and still has the other 3 in the freezer. I will also point out that she put that one back on day 3! Her doctor also wanted to be careful about twins and my friend 100 percent agreed with doing a SET on day 3.

Now she was bummed she only got 4 embryos, but her doctor very carefully explained the risks of OSHH and why she was not going to even come close to hyperstim-ing her. I think her doctor is intelligent and responsible. Its easy for a doctor to say oh, lets just hyperstim cause they are NOT the ones who suffer the disease afterwards.

On the contrary I think it was very responsible of you to mention to these ladies that OHSS was serious. This may lead them to research the disease and question their doctors more in the future!

Good job on your part!

Thanks.

With the GnRH agonist trigger, serious OHSS is impossible or nearly so. There is no need to play games with the stimulation. They can stimulate a high responder all they want, no need to compromise it and get a lousy cohort.

Oh well.
