Did you really mean the "no matter what your beliefs" part? Because, well, my wife and I are atheist, and were before we started trying to have a baby. For us, what kept us going was that having children was the most important thing in both our lives, and we knew we could be loving, caring parents once we did manage to have a baby. And after years of trying and four IVF cycles, looking into our beautiful daughter's eyes made it all worthwhile.

One thing I will say - growing up, I often heard the phrase "God helps those who help themselves." If I were religious, I don't think I'd believe that God just hands things to everyone on a silver platter; some people are lucky and get pregnant the week they start trying, but the rest of us have to face adversity and work through it to get where we are going.

Warren Dew: I did mean that. This process that we're going through is hard on everyone, regardless of faith or religious beliefs (and most likely confounded by them). If you and your wife want to give and get support, then you are in the right place!

I believe that your comments on God not giving us everything we want when we want it is correct. There is a reason I am going through this, and I believe that God has great plans for me, my husband, and our future children. Thank you for your comments.

Have any of you read "The Shack" by William "Paul" Young? Pretty powerful story about a man's journey to find God. Used copies at Amazon for $6.00. I read it about 6 months ago, and since have passed it around to a lot of my friends, family, etc. Worthwhile and pretty quick read.
