Ghost-Complication after OHSS?

Post by shep181 » Mon Dec 28, 2009 3:05 am

Hi There,
Thanks in advance for all of your great advice...hope you had a great holiday.
I am calling my RE tomorrow, but I had OHSS, had to be tapped once, and the symptoms have now subsided for the most part. Still a little bloated, but nothing like it was. My problem is, I have had a stabbing pain in the upper right quad of my abdomen since the OHSS started, and it is still extremely painful. Mostly when I stand or have been up and moving around. Laying down I have no pain unless I twist. At first I though it might be a pulled muscle, but it is not getting any better (the stabbing pain is actually a bit worse). It's now been almost 2 weeks since the height of the OHSS.
Have you ever heard of a liver contusion or some type of herniation as a result of OHSS? It's the only thing I can think of....?
Just curious because it seems strange for that type of pain, no where near the ovaries....?
Thanks!

Liver issues can result from OHSS, but we have never seen them. I don't know if they result in pain like you describe. I suspect not.

Could it perhaps be your right ovary? Sometimes they twist painfully as they grow during stimulation or as they shrink afterward. As an OhSS case, yours would have grown a lot and shrunk a lot. This condition is called ovarian torsion. These are rare, less than 1% of cycles, but more common than that in OHSS patients. It's very painful, and the pain changes as you shift about, as you describe.

My advice is to be assertive in getting medical attention for whatever you might have. Torsion, for example, can result in a damaged ovary in some cases.
Avoid IVF and surrogacy in Ukraine. Ukrainian centers pay shills to post here under numerous sock accounts pretending to be patients in Ukraine. Centers using such deceptive advertising cannot be trusted and should be avoided.

Thanks Ghost, I left a message for RE this morning. I assume the pain is too high for my ovary, but ironically, the last ultrasound I had the right ovary was so large it wouldn't fit on the screen, and she said it was very long, so maybe...?
Thanks for your help!

Is your pain near the rib cage under your right breast? Or is it lower than that? I had my gallbladder out in May and it was pain similar to what you are explaining. Could be a fluke to act up around OHSS time, but who knows. I would for sure see your doc.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the reply and congratulations on your BFP!!! I am about 6 weeks and went to the MD today for the pain...they also mentioned the gallbladder and I definitely felt the pain when she was looking at it. She said she couldn't tell without a fasting ultrasound...Not sure what that means for the pregnancy...
However, my pain soon vanished today when I found out I'm having twins!!!
Thanks for the info, and we'll keep you in our prayers...
God Bless!

Yay Shep! For a fasting ultrasound you can go first thing in the morning and not eat after midnight, so it shouldn't be too rough on you or the babies. You could have breakfast by 8:00 or so based on when they start appointments. It is very simple, just lie there and they do the ultrasound machine over the area. I had one while pregnant with my oldest because her head or foot was pushing on that area for months. I had another this year when it really was my gallbladder.

If the pain comes back, I would get it checked out. The pain came and went for me, but got very bad. I don't know if they would remove it while PG, but there are ways to treat it if you know the problem and the surgery is laproscopic and not too bad if they do remove it.

Good luck and congrats!
