IVF clinics in NYC

Postby Rosario » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:34 am

Moving back to NY at the end of the month. My little miracle will be 3 months in a few weeks. Really want to get started with #2. First cycle in NY was in Beth Israel but will not be returning to them at all. Any opinions on where I can go. I see many places are now offering affordable IVF packages for those who don't have ivf coverage as long as you live in the US. In much need of opinions. Eventually I know its not the actual IVF procedure cost that will affect me but the cost of the medications :(
IVF #1: Oct '08- BFN

Thank you so much. No bf here. I did do it for 2 weeks. I didn't have enough milk supply. Oddly enough I have a prolactioma and my endocrinologist said it would help in milk production but it really didn't :(

Hi!!!

I conceived my DD at a clinic in NYC. I have to say, NYC can be a crazy place...everyone is so competitive and of course all of the IVF clinics are as well. If you ask most people here in the city, the most prestigious IVF clinic is Cornell. The docs there are well regarded and supposedly top notch. I have heard however, that they can be somewhat impersonal as they are quite large and house a lot of doctors and residents.

For me, I needed a much more personal experience. I really felt raw through the whole experience and almost needed my hand held. My OB-GYN referred me to the practice at St. Luke's Roosevelt, Continuum Reproductive Center. I thank god everyday that she did!!! My doctor there, Dr. Daniel Stein, was absolutely amazing. He was right there with every step of the way. I'll never forget him. When I was at the clinic, there were only two docs...Dr. Stein and Dr. Keltz. I believe they have added another doc since, so I"m not sure if the dynamic has changed. We're also thinking about #2, probably after the summer...will definitely be going back to Dr. Stein. In a weird way...a very, very weird way...I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

All the best to you!!!
Me: 35 no known issues, DH 35 low morphology (2%) and low motility, bilateral vericocelectomy

IUI with clomid #1-#3: all BFN
IVF#1: BFN
IVF #2: M/C at 8 weeks
FET #1: BFP! DD 2 yrs old!

Trying for #2 soon and anxious again...didn't think I would be.

Hi Rosario-
I am from NY. And have spent the last 2 yrs at fertility clinics. Alot of them are rather impersonal but I found a particular DR who has his own practice. While Nothing ever worked for me (6 IUIs, 3 IVFs), I do believe the DR did his best. He spent alot of time with me, ran all the tests known to man, and would even call me directly with blood results. as well as meet on sat/ sun for necessary ultrasounds. He has 2 offices right in midtown area and the nurse Chava is great. My insurance didn't cover any IVF, but she was able to always gets a deal on the meds. DR name is Mitchell Essig. If you have any questions feel free to ask
Me 39
DH 38
TTC 4+yrs
unexplained infertility
6 failed IUIs (2 chem pg) in 2009/2010
3 failed IVFs in 2010/2011

Rosario, I went last year to the Center for Women´s Reproductive Care (Columbia Univ) which is Columbus Circle. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand we wre happy because the Center is very professional and all but it is also kind of impersonal and if you have any problem with anything (e.g. invoices or the such) they just don´t know how to handle these issues. Additionally, I had an issue with my plateles level just before starting the 1st cycle and the doctor just left me a voice mail raising the issue and didn´t follow it at all...........

I also went to Columbia. I think they are professional and straight up. And I found the opposite. One doctor had me pursue a thyroid issue, and kept asking about it. That said, it's a group practice, so you're not going to see the same doctor each time. The nurses are pros at taking blood, which is more important than you'd think because no one wants to start their already edgy day with a nasty poke.

That said, Columbia has very little wellness options, and NYU has a ton... yoga for fertility, acupuncture, mind-body, etc.

private message me if you want to hear more. lostgirl

I would recommend RMA of NY. I can't compare it to anywhere else but I think the doctors are very experienced and the embryologists are fantastic. It's a little bit like a factory, but I didn't care. I was there for results not to make new relationships. And I am pregnant after one IVF cycle...thank god and RMA.
I have been told by many that if you have more "serious problems" or are a complicated case, Cornell is by far the absolute best. NYU also has a very very good reputation. Can't go wrong with any of the 3 as far as I'm concerned.
Good luck to you!
Me- 26 (perfect)
DH- 33 (questionable low morphology)
Conceived naturally- miscarried at 6 wks
3 Failed IUIs on Clomid and Ovidril
1st IVF Sep-Oct 2010
22 retrieved, ICSI on 21
2 blasts transfered/ 1 frozen
BFP!!! THANK GOD

Hi
I am from NYC too
We did 4 IVF cycles at Columbia, and are now doing one at NYU.
If your insurance works at NYU I'd go there. Columbia Doctors and nurses are great, but the rest of it -- mainly the front desk, the medical records dept and the billing dept -- are incredibly messy and incompetent.
NYU is more expensive and they only take Aetna and United insurance, and also I find that they are more complicated to get to than Columbia's amazing location (NYU is on 38th and 1st ave, about 10 minutes walk from Grand Central, while Columbia is at Columbus Circle).
The best thing about Columbia compared with NYU is their FREE weekly support group. I'm most grateful for the support I received there and not sure I could have done this without them. NYU has "support classes" but they are very limited and cost money.
Anyways, good luck!! May the change of city bring a change of luck!

I've heard good things about RMA, Cornell, NYU, and perhaps not too far away, UConn.
Note: I am not an MD and not an expert.
