Postby B » Tue Apr 13, 2004 12:45 pm

Hi,
I am hoping to start IVF pretty soon, but am nervous about the whole thing and feel guilty that I am not excited, I am also concerned about the process of Egg Collection as I have heard a few horror stories,
any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

Hi B

As Traci says we are all going through this, and it really is not so bad!

The injections themselves are okay once you have done your first one, and the egg colleciton procedure wasn't bad at all. I had a mixutre of sedatives and painkillers on the day, and to be honest I can't remember much of the procedure, my partner said I was actually snoring whilst the process was happening - aarrgh!

Anyway, its overwith pretty quickly, you can then be driven home to sleep the effect of the sedatives off, and they give you more painkillers if you need to take them. I wasn't too bad, just some cramping, but I never actually took the painkillers, and the next day, apart from some cramping still, I was fine.

Good luck, and keep us informed of how you get on xx

I'm new too

Postby janem » Tue Apr 20, 2004 2:20 pm

Hi B
I'm new to IVF too. My DH and I go for our first appointment next month so I'm not sure what we will be letting ourselves in for. I think the only advice I can give is not to let it take over your life and think about some counselling to help reduce the stress levels and 'why us' factor. We are not feeling particulary excited, we are feeling apprehensive but we hope it will be successful. The thought of the drugs etc fill me with dread but this site is great and I've learnt alot from those who post.
Good luck and it would be nice to keep in touch

new to IVF / this site too

Postby jonell » Wed Apr 28, 2004 10:38 am

Hi all -

I am new to IVF and this site too. My husband and I are on day 7 of my lupron injections and go for our first round of blood tests etc. on Sunday of this week.

He is post vas (25 years ago), with unsuccessful reversal / re-exploration, shows sperm on aspiration but has one daughter (29 yo). I have one daughter and have no other fertility issues.

I am interested in hearing about issues with meds, other couples with similar histories. I guess right now I don't have any issues / problems with meds or the process but just apprehensive because we obviously want a little one!!!!

I'm curious about some abbreviations...here is what I think a few are but don't know about others;
DH???
RE = reprod. endocrin. MD
DUI = donor uterine insemination

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated....thanks and good luck to all -

Hi B & Jane,

I'm New too, my partner had a vasectomy 8 years ago. He had a failed reversal in Oct 2002. We were planning to do IVF last October but I'm embarassed to say I got sacred so we opted for a second reversal which again failed.

Today my partner has had a PESA. They have taken sperm to freeze, we should be starting a cycle beginning June.

I'm very afraid of the drugs and what they do long term, I'm afraid of feeling ill. I have struggled to get my head around this but I have to accept that this is our only option now.

I would really like it if we could stay in touch.
Best Wishes
Karen

PS I would also like to know what DH is!

Hi Girls

DH is "dear husband" - I too used to wonder waht all the abbreviations were - you will pick them up as you go along - honest!

Karen - IVF is very daunting first time around, I am just about to start my 2nd treatment cycle and feel completely different and more relaxed this time as I know what to expect. But it isn't half as bad as you think or have beentold. I had no side affects from the drugs, apart from my boobs going from a 34C to a 34DD!!! If anything I was more hyper and upbeat but that could have just been the fact that I having having treatment therefore felt I was soon going to pregnant.

But don't worry too much, you'll be fine, and we are all here to answer any questions
Take Care xx

Hi Girls,

I am on my first IVF treatment and was worried about the drugs too. I started on the sniffer and have now injected the stims for the last 5 days. I didn't think I could inject myself but it was easy - honest. I have had a bit of a headache which I think is a side effect but nothing major.

This site has been a good source of knowledge, I have not posted often but have logged on just to read what everyone else is going through. It helps to know you are not alone.

Good luck with your treatments.

I'm in the same boat that y'all are. I start my injections tomorrow. I do have a question though--what is a sniffer? My doctor hasn't mentioned anything about that.
