Worried about egg retrieval

Post by brit10 » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:19 pm

After only 7 days of stim drugs, they took me off of them today. I do the HCG shot tonight and have the egg retrieval on Wednesday.

On my ultrasound today they saw 7 eggs that were ready (over 14mm). I was really hoping for more. I've got to have 2 to put back, so I'm worried that my margain of error is too small. I was hoping for eggs in the double digits.

Anyway, I'm just worried and a little sad today. Thankfully I've got an accupuncture apt in an hour which should help me feel better. My dh says there's nothing to worry about...easier said then done.

Don't be sad Brit I only had 8 follies and 4eggs and out of that 4 3 were put back in and I just learned today that I am 2weeks pregnant!!

My best advice to you is if you drink a lot of water make sure you take a sip or two right before your food/water cut off and also wear wool socks to your appointment. It's very cold in those rooms and they let me keep my socks on!

Head up girl!

I'm sending lot's of baby dust your way!

Hi Brit10 -

Are you stressing about having only 7 eggs or that the ER/ET dates are so close?

If you are stressing about the number of eggs, just remember it's the quality of the eggs, not the quantity. I was told that same thing (by some wonderful ladies on this board) when I was stressing about the fact that so few of my eggs had fertilized.

If you are stressing about the ER/ET, don't. The ER and ET were painless. They knock you out for the ER and I didn't remember a thing. The ET was painless as well but you are awake for that.

You'll be fine. Just think about the end result and you'll be ok

You could have more than 7 eggs. They weren't expecting alot from myself and they retrieved 19. By the end of it I only had 2 left to implant so quality is important, not quantity. I hope everything is successful for you and don't worry about the transfer itself, it was a piece of cake. And yes don't forget warm socks!!!

Thanks girls, I'm feeling a little better tonight. I had an accupuncture apt today that helped, and we just did my HCG shot without a hitch.

I guess it's out of my hands now anyway. Let's just hope for the best for all of us!!

Brit,

I just had my ER today. This is my 2nd attempt at IVF. My first attempt I had 18 follies and 18 eggs and transferred 2 at the blastocyst stage. With all those good numbers, I still didn't succeed.

I truly understand how you could feel down. This time I started with 6 follies, at day 9 of stims I was told I had 8. I felt really sad and devastated. Unfortunately, we don't have any control other than doing what our Dr's ask us to do.

Going in today, my Dr also emphasized the quality vs quantity point. With my 18 eggs last time, 2 were immature, 10 fair and 6 poor. So even though i had a good number, the quality wasn't necessarily that great.

The other thing is, when I woke up from surgery, my doctor actually retrieved 12 eggs instead of 8 from the 8 follies they saw all this time.

So, you never know until you know. I've read many posts where women with a smaller number of follies who are successful. Keep your chin up.

Zooka,

12 was the lucky number for me today as well. Going in, they thought I had only 6, but retrieved an even dozen. I feel better knowing I've got more to work with, but I know it's more about quality then quantity.

Good luck and keep me updated. It's nice knowing someone else who is at the same stage as I am.

Best wishes,
Brit

Luchia and Brit,

Got my first embryo report today. Out of 12 eggs, only 8 were mature enough to be fertilized. Out of those 8, 3 actually fertilized. Last IVF cycle, I had 10 on day one that fertilized and 14 the following day. The embryologist thinks maybe 2 more will fertilize by tomorrow's update.

I was also told that 3 out of my 8 mature eggs were of fair quality and 5 were poor. I'm starting to reach a point of acceptance that I may never have biological children.

I probably shouldn't talk like that but sometimes when you have too much hope and expectations, failure can be devastating. This time I'm trying to keep my emotions as neutral as possible.

Brit,

I told you about the eggs....you never know till you know. ALso, I wanna tell you that getting the daily reports are a roller coaster ride. Don't be surprised by anything you hear. One day, you've got nothing but poor or fair quality embies, next day, they can somehow become good quality.

Luchia,

Thanks for sharing your story. I really do need to have SOME hope and your story helps me have a little.

My first report yesterday (24 hours after ER) was that 9 out of the 12 eggs fertilized...which they told me was good news. I am now waiting this morning for my next report.

z, it doesn't sound like anything is over yet...there is still a chance! take some time for yourself today. i know there is no such thing as "taking your mind off it" but at least do something you enjoy that may help you relax a bit. YOU and your lovely, welcoming womb can't be stressed out when they put those beanies back!
