FET vs. IVF

Postby rn2005 » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:36 am

Hi all!
I am new to all of this and have a question...what is the difference between FET and IVF? I see that a lot of people have success with FET and I am not familiar with it? Thanks!

IVF is the full treatment, having cycle manipulated, produce lots of eggs, their removal and fertilization etc
FET (frozen embryo transfer) is when one or more of the frozen embryos from cycle of IVF are thawed and transferred.
Hope this makes sense, just send me a message if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them

Hi rn2005,

IVF is the process of undergoing bloodwork, U/S's and hormone therapy (i.e. injections) done with "fresh samples", meaning fresh eggs & sperm forming a fertilized embryo. Depending on how many embroyos you & your doctor decide to put back inside you, you may or may not have remaining embryos that are viable to freeze. However, if there are any remaining good quality embryos, the remaining ones can be frozen.

FET's (Frozen Embryo Transfer) are done after you have undergone a failed IVF but have "left over" good quality frozen embryos. The advantage of doing a FET is that you don't have to go through all of the stimulation injections to create more follicles. However, when thawing, many times, NOT ALL the time, the embryos have the possibility of not surviving.

I hope this helps to clear things up!

Good Luck & God Bless You in any future cycles...BABY DUST!
