First IUI. . .so many thoughts. . .i feel lost

Postby afb2440 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 3:06 am

I just had my first IUI on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. I didn't do any kind of medications or anything. The doc said I wouldn't need them b/c I was able to ovulate on my own. Now I gotta wait the long dreaded 14 days. I really hope that this works. I had my tubes tied back in Oct 2002. Then had them untied Jan 2009 when me and my new hubby decided we wanted a baby together. I have had no luck on my own trying to concieve, so I got the doc to refer me to see a specialist. We monitored for two months then went forward with the IUI. Now I'm just hoping and praying it works. I wonder if you have better results if you use clmid or what not. Each IUI is out of my pocket and so would the IVF if we have to go that way. Military only pays for blood work and ultrasounds so far that i'm sure of. Is anyone else going through the same thing right now. I'm kinda scared and want this to work so much. . .

1st IUI: 27 July 2010
Tubes untied: Jan 2009
Tubes tied: Oct 2002
1st child: 14 March 2000
2nd child: 7 Oct 2002

Hi abf - our stories are very similar. I had a tubal ligation in 1996 and a tubal reversal in Aug 2008. We had one chemical pregnancy Aug 2009 and an ectopic in Feb 2010 where I lost my right tube and right ovary. So after trying for almost 2 years on our own, we're going to go through our 1st IUI cycle as soon as AF shows up (she's due Mon or Tues.) I ovulate too, but being that I'm 37 and down to one ovary, we wanted to be a bit more aggressive so I'll be using injectables with my first IUI to see if we can stimulate my one ovary more before the insemination.

The IUI with injectables aren't cheap - this cycle will be about $2500 when you add in the meds, all the screening, & insemination. My primary insurance covers nothing and while I do have DH's tricare standard as my secondary, I'd have to get a referral from the base doctor. But I can't see the base doctor because I have to use my primary insurance first, yada, yada, yada so we're completely out of pocket. The RE feels pretty optimistic about trying IUI a couple times since I have gotten pregnant twice since the reversal, but if we have no luck with the IUIs, we'll move onto IVF at that point.

Good luck and definitely keep me posted on how it goes!! :D

Klinger13,
Yeah I know it isn't cheap. At the specialty clinic here the IUI without meds is $300. Where the IVF normal w/o meds is $3000 and IVF with meds is $7000. So we are really hoping this IUI works first time. I wish I would have done this when I was still active duty, but I didn't have the reversal until I was out of military for about 3 months. I have Tricare prime but they don't cover much. Now since the iui I gotta sit and wait the 2 wks to see if it worked. My fingers are crossed. I'll keep u posted. Will u keep me posted too? Hope to talk soon.

I'll definitely keep you posted and keep my fingers crossed for you that it works the first time! I'm hoping for that too! :) I agree, I hate the 2WW...the first 2 weeks of a cycle go so quick, then the 2WW drags on forever! And I'm sure it will drag even worse when I do the IUI.

Did you have good tube lengths after your reversal? I ended up with 8.0 on each side and an HSG in May 2009 showed both open, but then I lost the right one with my ectopic. They said the left looked good when they did the surgery to remove the right, so hopefully it doesn't block up anytime soon or I'll definitely be moving on to IVF.

Hi ladies,

My story is a bit different from you ladies. I'm 24 years old with hormone levels, amh levels 0.8/ fsh 10 . Both fallopian tubes were fine, the right one was a little inflamed. I've been trying to conceive for almost 2 years. Last month i did my first IUI because i got horrible new thats i really would not be able to conceive on my own. My hormones are basically normal for a 38 yr old ( not a 24 yr old!). I did injectable hormone treatments, followed by a trigger shot, and then the actual IUI. It was the most devastating thing for me because my husband and I are just such a young couple to be going through such a traumatizing experience. Furthermore, the IUI was not a success for me... this month we have decided to take a break, and start next menstrual cycle. God willing, hopefully September will be a good month for us. -=( Its just such a horrible time in our lives and i pray to god that the next IUI will be a success.

I pray for you ladies. Sorry for my sob story, but i just needed to share to those who know some what how i feel.

Well, I got the call today. I had done my blood work yesterday. Bascially I was told nope your not prego you should start today or tmw. Call us when you do.

The news has absolutely crushed me today. I've spent so much $$ to be able to have a baby with my hubby and nothing. Parts of me just want to give up. I can't get prego on my own and can't seem to get prego with help of fertility docs.

afb - don't give up! I've been told you should expect 3-4 IUI cycles before thinking about next steps. I am on my second one, in the dreaded 2ww. I know it's hard when you receive the bad news, but hopefully you can find the strengh to pick yourself back up and try again!

Starting another cycle monitoring to be able to try yet another IUI. I went on day 14 to check my levels and to look for folicles. I was told no sign of folicles. I then got a call a few hours later telling me that I must be ovulating late this month. I go back on day 17 for more blood work and to look for folicles. Hopefully this time I'll have good size folicles and will be able to do another round when IUI. Just hope that it works this time.

afb - hopefully they'll see some follies at your next visit. I never got to do the IUI I had planned - I ended up getting pregnant naturally but unfortunately it was another ectopic so I lost my last tube. So now that I'm "tubeless" I'm moving on to IVF and hopefully will have some success from that. Good luck though with this IUI cycle!!

After getting really annoyed with doctor and nurses, I went in for my 2nd round of IUI on 31 August 2010. When the doctor did the procedure she said it went really well and it was really easy to inject the specimens. So now I sit and do my long dragged out 2WW. I'm now on day 4 of the wait and trying to make sure that i stay relaxed and positive about this go around. I'll find out like two days before I start back fulltime to college. My fingers are crossed that this time it works. As long as this time works then hubby will be home when it is time for delivery. If it doesn't work this montha nd we do another round next month then we will be playing with time. Hubby is scheduled to deploy summer next year. As much as I want him to be home with me when i would deliver, I figure if it happens then it happens. i'll manage on my own until it returns. I just don't want to wait until after he comes back to try to get prego. I'm not getting any younger. LOL Hubby the other day on our way home from the procedure asked if I was going to keep trying with IUI if it doesn't work this time or if I was going to just wait until he left and then returns after a year long deployment. I told him that I think i wanted to keep trying. He was like good, it would suck if you had to start back over from the begining with all of this if we waited until I got back. Deployments are a long year and he didn't want me to have to restart everything. So with that being said, "I gotta stay positive and relaxed. I would rather this cycle work this time."

FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!!!!

Hello Guys,

I guess what I need to know is...well, anything you have to contribute! More than anything though, the success rate of IUI would be good if anyone out there had an easy go of it! Oh, and by the way, my first three children were all not planned....and I am 32....today as a matter of fact!
Thank you in advance for all your support!

Thanks,

2WW is now over. I was having good vibes that it had worked this time. BUT I got the phone call that stated: got your test results back and they were negative, you should start in a day or two, then she was like have a nice day bye! So another IUI cycle that ended in heartbreak again and out of money yet again for the 2nd month in a row.

Later on today I called the dr office back again and was like what is to happen now. she informed me that the doc said she wants to give it 6 tries b4 we go to anything else. Just the way that comes across to me is like they are in this for the money. Lord knows i'm not made of money. I figured that the people in the office would have more compassion for the couples that the procedures that don't work and the heartbreak that they feel, but nothing. Am i all alone on this one?

I'm sorry afb,

They really should have shown you more compassion. The 2ww is so incredibly stressful and the letdown with a bfn is hard enough without any compassion.

I am a very unusual IUI sitution. I am an "older" woman and so they very quickly started with IVF with me...as you can see in my signature, my first attempt was very aggressive and I ended up quite sick--almost dying actually. I was in and out of the hospital for 6 weeks only to end with a ruptured tube from an ectopic pregnancy. I left that clinic and went to another where I completed 2 cycles of IVF--thus completely depleting my insurance lifetime allotment. Sigh. The second clinic and NO compassion and no bedside manner at all. It was unbelievable, really. Even after my miscarriage with my last and final IVF..I didn't get any "sorry" and not a single follow-up call. I went to my OBGYN to get monitored while my beta dropped back down.

Anyway--due to financial reasons, we cannot afford IVF...and my clock is ticking so loud it hurts! So--I found another clinic--the last one in town and met with the doctor today. He was wonderful. Very understanding and very willing to do IUI with me with injectables. SO--despite my age and having only one tube I am keeping PMA and am about to embark on a SUCCESSFUL IUI cycle. :)

afb--stay positive!!

I would love to cycle with some ladies...the IVF threads seem to be booming, but it doesn't seem like much action over here...I wonder if they'd "let" me cycle along with them?

Margi - come join us on the fall thread. I've been doing IUI also, but joined the IVF thread, because like you said, these aren't very active. The women are so wonderful! I'm taking a break until January, so I'm reading, but not posting a lot. Good luck and I'll be checking on you!
