URGENT - 14 weeks pregnant

Post by gori » Tue Feb 26, 2008 4:37 pm

Hello everyone! I have an urgent question. I just turned 14 weeks today & got a call from my gynae - she said she wanted to discuss my test results & she cannot discuss over the phone. She has asked me to come into her office in 2 hrs. Meanwhile, I am going crazy. I am afraid it's not good news. I had NT test [u/s] done last week. The u/s looked good for the NT test. Only thing was that they took my blood test & that could be the only result my gynae may want to discuss with me. Although my gynae mentioned something like 'AFP test' I thought on the phone. But it cannot be AFP results as that test is only done between 16-18 weeks of pregnancy. Anybody has any ideas what I might be going in for? I am not sure how I will survive these 2 hrs. PLS any advise would be great!!
Regards

I am sorry I don't have a ton of information to offer but if you look in this board and on the internet, the blood tests are often a false positive for defects and further testing is necessary. So even if she says something came up, don't despair, and do further testing. I know it is easier said then done, but a quick search will show you healthy babies were born even when moms got bad news on preliminary tests, good luck and keep us posted!

Post immediately please! I will be sending all my good vibes your way until we hear from you!

My Dr. likes to discuss things in person regardless of what the news is. They may find your blood tests to be low in one thing or another and it may have nothing to do directly with the baby. Think positive regardless and I can't wait to hear your big sigh of relief!

Take care!

Hi again

Post by gori » Tue Feb 26, 2008 8:59 pm

Unfortunately, it's not good news. My blood/hormonal tests show a 1 in 46 chance of Down syndrome. I have no family history of down syndrome, my first child thru normal preg, is also perfectly fine. I just turned 35 [not too far from the cut off], plus my NT screening was all good. Even after all these +ves, my blood result of 1 in 46 is certainly a very high chance [should have been 1 in 180]. So my gynae recommended amnio. I had anyway scheduled an amnio, given that this is an ICSI and my HCG levels were quite high in the beginning of the pregnancy. I have been really stressed since I heard this, but I cannot do anything but wait. Amnio is another 2 weeks away and the results will be available in 1-2 weeks after that. So overall, a 4 week wait. I know some times there are false positives, however, since all my other factors were so good/positive, I cannot help but think that my hormone levels are indicating something bad! Any positive stories with a similar background as mine, would be much appreciated.

Hi Gori,
I'm so sorry you got such stressful news. My sister had similar results with her last baby 2 years ago. The nuchal test measurement was bad at 8mm and the blood work was inconclusive. I'm not sure what percent chance they gave her but it was very ominous and the MD's were telling her that "at best" her baby would have Downs and also most likely a heart defect. Long story short, the baby is just fine -no Downs and very, very healthy. But she had to suffer through a very stressful pregnancy with worrying about the baby.
Since then I heard many other similar stories about the nuchal tests being inaccurate. My husband's boss also had the same thing happen to her and her baby is fine.
Remember, 1/46 may sound high but that's what, roughly 2 out of 100? Please forgive my terrible math.
Hang in there,
2ndtimer

My friend's result came back at 1 in 5 risk of DS and she opted not to have the amnio and her baby was fine. It's stressful as we are always programmed to think the worse, but when you think about it, 1 in 46 is still pretty good odds of having a normal baby. I'm not too sold on those nuchal 'guestimates'. They are only 80% accurate anyway and a lot of the time don't pick up abnormalities that can generally be seen at the 19 week mark.

Thanks Dexter & 2nd timer & Kholtan. You know, it's amazing how at times, some words of comfort can make such a difference!!!!! Thanks a ton again. I know, whatever has to happen, will happen. But it's great to know these success stories out there. It gives you the much needed reassurance! I will try & relax a bit now. I have been a nervous wreck since this morning!! Just a bit more info, the measurement for NT was 1 mm which was great but the blood work is throwing them off. Will keep you guys posted.

With my first girl (natural) at 38, my NT looked great, but my blood work was so bad (they said 'classic DS signs') that I was given a 1/10 chance of DS. I did the amnio (not at all painful -- other than emotionally draining) and everything came out great. It was a false positive. When you do the amnio, you will get a detailed U/S which will give you a greater sense of the outcome (the final test results don't come out for a bit and that is nerve wrecking). In any event, back to what I was saying . . . when you do the amnio, the Dr. will look for a strong nose bone, that none of the hands/feet are webbed, that the 4 chambers are clearly separated, etc. These factors weigh AGAINST DS. When my Dr. went down the check list and said everything looks great, it gave me hope during the waiting period.

I was a complete mess about the amnio -- not good to be stressed as your baby will feel this. Worry only if the facts tell you to worry (hard to do, I understand, but sage advice if you can follow it). I have heard of so many false positives on the blood work and I have been the "victim" of such a false positive. Wishing you all the luck and sending my thoughts your direction.

Wow BabyB.... I am feeling better & better!! Thanks a ton!!! Great advice on amnio route as well, and makes all kinds of sense to follow. Will certainly try to keep myself calm, esp after reading all these positive stories.

My sister came back with a 1/26 chance of downs. The amnio showed no downs.

Good luck.

After all these years on message boards and following hundreds of stories I can not remember any that turned out bad but I can remember countless times that they turned out great!

You are still in my thoughts because I know it's stressful. Do the best you can to relax and think positive. The mind is a powerful tool! We'll alll be here for you in the meantime. HUGS!!!!!!!!

Take care~
