Nuchal Test Results

Postby BabiesGalore » Fri Dec 12, 2008 11:00 pm

Hi. I just had my first screening (nuchal test) done today and found out that my baby's neck was measuring above normal (3.0) so i decided to go in for a CVS test as i need to get it done soon given that i am just about 13 weeks. I got the test scheduled for monday at GIVF. Has anyone had this test done and can anyone give me some success stories. I am a basket case of nerves right now. Anyone? Thanks

i don't have a personal story but my cousin is going through this same thing right now. at 12 weeks her babies neck fold was measuring the same-they did the CVS which came back normal. after that they still told her there was a chance of something being wrong-at 22 weeks she is doing great and the baby's neck fold is normal! i think sometimes these tests come back abnormal because we do so much so early now. in the past when we didn't have the option-you didn't hear about as many problems. in my cousin's case if she would have never had the 12 week nuchal scan all teh stress and worry would have never happened! we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
let me know if you have any questions

babiesgalore I'm actually having it on Thursday & am also nervous. I have to because of my age. A girlfriend of mine had one a couple of weeks ago & she said it wasn't too bad...it's a little uncomfortable & crampy but over pretty quickly. She paid extra to get the quick FISH results which covers Downs & also the sex of the baby..I think those initial results took 2 or 3 days
Just make sure your doctor has performed the procedure a lot...then it's faster & less uncomfortable.
Good luck with everything!

I had the CVS test done at 11 weeks. They numb your skin, but not the muscles underneath, so it is a little painful but not bad. Luckily it only takes a minute or two. I had no cramping or bleeding afterwards. My best advice is to make sure the doctor doing your test is very experienced. You want someone who does 1 or 2 a week, not 1 or 2 a month.

I got my results one week later, 2 perfectly healthy boys. I was 38 when they were born, so we were so relieved to know everything was fine.

(Because I had identical twins and only one placenta, they could due the test on me. When you have twins with 2 placentas, they can't do the CVS.)

I am sure everything will go well and you will be so relieved to know your baby is healthy.

LauraLou, you can have the CVS test when you are carrying non-idential twins. I am scheduled to have mine done on Dec 26th. They have to do two seperate tests.
I am having my done at Thomas Jefferson Univ Hosp. in Philly. The doctor that is doing the test on me is very experienced and has a long history of doing this on multiple births.
I will let you know how we do.

Gawd, I so feel for you. I do know of a freinds of a freind who had the same exact thing as you. The CVS confirmed here baby was fine even thought the Nuchal Scan / Screening was not considered normal. The Nuchal Scan / Screening is not the most accurate measuremnt, it really isnt. But its a good alternative to invasive CVS and amnio.

I am thinking posiitive thoughts for you.....I understand your worry, but that test real gives ALLOT of false positives.

Just wanted to update everyone on my test. It was a horrible experience. The doctor decided to go in cervically as the tissue was below and could not be easily accessed abdominally. So he tries the first time and removes some tissue and finds out that he only got my tissue and not the fetal tissue. he goes back in a second time and after lots of probing and pain he decides that he could not get to the tissue as my cervix was tilted and the catheter could not reach it. It was really horrible. On top of it i still have to rest as i am having bleeding now because of all the probing. I now have to wait for another 3 weeks and then go in for an amnio. I am so bummed. I prepared myself for this and it did not happen. Just praying that everything turns out fine.

BabiesGalore I'm so sorry...that sounds awful!! Wow. Make sure you still rest for a couple of days.
I think that's what everybody means by getting somebody who does & has done lots & lots of them. I know a girl who went in & the doctor told her right away the baby was in the wrong position to attempt it. They waited a few days to see if the baby moved...it did, & they were able to do it no problem.

Wish me luck on Thursday! I'm really nervous now.

Hang in!

Good Lord that sounds insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so sorry. Man that really sucks you just went throught that. I HIGHLY suggest you rest for several days and take it easy for the rest of the week. I am so sorry this has happned to you. I have no words of comfort- other than try to think positive as best as you can and lets hope your amnio goes allot better.
Are you going back to the same guy for the amnio??

Thanks Rin and TooBee. I am on bed rest for two days. Hope the bleeding stops. this doctor is suppose to be one of the best in the areas and apparently he has loads of experience with CVS. Not sure what happened. Maybe he had a bad day.

Hey girls

BabiesGalore I hope you're doing ok!

I posted this on my Mommies thread but wanted to do it here so everybody isn't freaked out by the CVS.
It was a piece of cake for me.
If anybody has had an IUI, it's just like that...except they're sucking in instead of pushing out. It's a tiny bit uncomfortable & a bit of cramping afterwards ( like you're getting your period ), but no big deal. It was also very quick. I asked about BabiesGalore's situation & they said if the baby was positioned wrong he would just go through the stomach like an amnio.

If anybody ends up doing it the best advice i can give is get a good Doctor who does them all the time. This Dr did 15 yesterday. He doesn't do them every day, but does about 150 a month. You could just tell he was really comfortable & it was easy for him.
I have to say, I'm very happy I will be sure the baby is healthy or not, if that's the case. It's nice to have something concrete in all this.
