Multivitimins - to take or not to take!!

Postby Sarah30 » Wed Nov 13, 2002 12:47 pm

Hello

Has or was anyone else given an early pregnancy care sheet by their clinic that said they should take a multi-vitimin tablet? Is anyone else taking multivits?

The reason I ask is that mine did, and I went to the chemist to get some today telling him they needed to be suitable for use during pregnancy and he said he would not recommend any multi vitimin tablets and that eating a healthy balanced diet is a much better idea. He also said something about the tablets having certain vits and minerals that your body stores and large amounts could be harmful to the baby.

What does everyone else think?

I speak to the nurse at the clinic after and she said you can get one called Pregnacare, but I'm not sure what to do now.

Sarah :o)

Sarah

First of all many congratulations!

I think you should at the very least take folic acid tablets. I have been taking Sanatogen Pro-Natal vitamins. I think you need to make sure that you take special pregnancy vitamins as normal vitamins can contain things that are harmful in high quantities during pregnancy.

Good Luck!

Love
Dee x.

Multivitimins - to take or not to take!!

Postby Jules » Wed Nov 13, 2002 6:20 pm

Hi Sarah

Congratulations to you and dh!! I understand if it hasn't sunk in yet, I'm 8 weeks and still feel that way!

I was taking Sanatogen pronatal tablets, but since getting pg have switched to Zita West multivitamins. Is anyone else taking her stuff by the way? – I'd be interested to know.

Basically she does a range of pg mineral/nutrient supplements for each trimester. It's a bit on the dear side but I'm giving it a go as I want to give my baby the best chance I can! Her website is zitawest.com if you want to check it out.

I've never heard of vitamins being harmful if stored in the body. It is best to take ones specifically for pregnancy as Dee says, and you def need folic acid. I agree they don't replace a healthy balanced diet, but I see them as a top up if you are lacking any nutrient in your diet.

Hope this helps!

Jules x

Multivitimins - to take or not to take!!

Sarah,

I took pregnacare as the morning sickness affected my diet and I couldn't eat anything acidic like oranges and most fruits for the first few weeks. I also lost about half a stone in the first trimester and that was why my doc suggested pregnacare. Boots do an own brand pregnancy and breast feeding multi-vit which is practically identical to pregnancare but cheaper. Each health visitor and doc tell you different things so just do what you are confortable with. And any word on when your first scan is?????

Take Care
Nicky

Thanks gals!

I think I'll go to boots at lunchtime and see what they have. I'll get a special pregnancy one. (I have been taking folic acid separately as already knew about that one).

No scan date yet Nicky - I have another blood test tomorrow to check that hormone levels are still increasing, when I get the results of that they will discuss scan date - I think it will be at six weeks but not sure - can't wait anyway!! Just hope tomorrow's test is ok.

Has anyone else had more than 1 blood test?

Sarah :o)
