Abdominal Ultrasound for 5w6d?? Normal? Anyone? X-Post...

Postby DandMe » Fri Feb 26, 2010 1:19 am

I had an early ultrasound today at 5w6d. The tech was annoyed (this is not my RE clinic - it's a local lab) and said I would have more questions than answers when she was done. She was horribly quick, barely took any time, and said there was 'No reason to distrube anything' with a transvaginal ultrasound.

We saw the sac right away - it was about 12 mm (from what I could figure out) by about 3.5mm. I couldn't tell if there was a second 'ring' (?). She just took two stills, measured it, and said I could go. I didn't see anything that looked like a yolk sac, much less anything that looked like a hb.

I thought ALL early ultrasound were done vaginally?? I feel better about seeing the sac, and I *think* it measures well... but I really did leaving foolish and embarassed.

DandMe- I think I remember reading in all of my insane research about what to expect during your first ultrasound that they are usually done vaginally that early. It isn't disturbing anything at all. It can give better details for some reason. I have no idea why. I had mine yesterday (one day early due to the snowie mess here around NYC) and I was 5w2d. They found two sacs  at 5mm and 6mm but no yolk sac yet. The average size of the gestational sac is around 1mm for each week of age on average. I felt worried to not see the yolk sacs but my RE said it is very very early and he doesn't see it half the time this early. I return on Sunday to see if it showed up. I would ask your RE to do a vaginal u/s . Do you know why you weren't given one by your RE? Is it normal for them to send you to a lab for u/s? If they did your u/s during stimming, they can do it for your preg u/s. It is the same machine. I'm sending you good energy for you and the baby! When is your next u/s? :D

I know... the u/s tech was being a total b!tch. She knew she couldn't see anything and I think she was surprised to see the sac, to be honest.

Two sacs! That's so exciting! You are early, even a day can make all the difference at this point!

Oh, and my clinic is 700 miles away. This is a small town lab, desperate for staffing so they take what they can get. My next ultrasound is on March 9th...
