What to expect on first OB visit?

Postby Merri_Baby_Dust » Sun Mar 21, 2010 1:50 pm

After being an IVF expert for so long - I find I know nothing about how to be pregnant. Can anyone share exactly what happened on their first OB visit?

I'm at 8.5 weeks and my first OB visit I'll be at 9 weeks. We are having a singleton and he/she has a great little heartbeat we've seen twice.

Thanks!

Merri

Hi Merri. I had my first OB just two days ago at 8w3d. I am happy to share my experience. Keep in mind I am having twins (and like you am clueless about what to expect). Before I saw my OB, the nurse of the office had me give a urine sample, took my weight and blood pressure. My OB spent about 1 1/2 hours with me...which I think is unusually long. He asked me alot of questions about family history, my current conditions, meds I'm taking. Then he let me ask him all of the questions I had written down. Then he did a basic exam (with nurse present in the room) of throat, chest, breasts, abdomin. Then did the abdominal ultrasound (didn't do a vaginal one b/c I had been bleeding recently from a subchorionic hematoma). Measured each babies length, heart beats, etc...pointed out why I had been bleeding...explained all of that...checked ovaries/size. Then I had to give blood. After that, I left with a prescript for iron (something he does for all multiples) and told to return in 2 weeks. He even called me the next day to get my progesterone level (which I was waiting on from the last RE visit). Long story short, your OB should be thorough and let you ask as many questions as you need to ask. Please feel free to ask me more questions if you have any. Hope it goes well and that you are feeling great! :D

Hi Merri,

I recently delivered a healthy baby girl conceived thru IVF. Karen has already given you all the information about your first OB visit. I just wanted to add that your OB might brief you on some prenatal screening tests that should be taken during your 12th or 13th week. These tests are not mandatory and its purely your personal decision, so don't feel pressurized.

Good Luck!
