Swellings, May Need To Have Wedding Ring Cut Off

Hi Everyone

Well what a day I have had. Went to work today and felt fine apart from trying to get my rings off. Managed to get my engagement ring off and eternity ring but just can't get my wedding ring to budge I have tried everything.

I also noticed that my ankles are swollen and I can't get the zip up on my boots and people at work was making me worry because they said they shouldn't be that swollen.

I got in touch with my GP but the surgery is closed this afternoon so I was advised to contact my midwife at the hospital. She was in a meeting but I got to speak to someone else. She asked me if I have had alot of headaches, blurred vision and I said I hadn't she asked me if I felt well in myself and I said I did. I explained everything to her that I just can't get my wedding ring off and that it hurts and she advised I may need it cut off but to see if the swelling goes down.

She advised me to come home from work and rest and put my feet up which I done and admittenly that as helped with the swelling of my ankles, just wish I could get my ring off.

I have also booked in to see the midwife tomorrow because the hospital said she will do the checks and also she will check my waters to make sure everything is ok.

People at work said its one of the signs of pre-eclampsia or toxcemia (sorry spelt wrong) and its worrying me sick.

Love
Shell.
23wks pg
Hi Shell,

Try a cold compress (ice in a tea towel if you haven't got a gel one), slightly elevate your arm (but not too much - you don't want to loose all the blood in that arm) and if you think it may have gone down enough to try again, put liquid soap (washing up liquid will do) on your finger - with any luck it will slide off.

Swelling may be one of the signs of pre-eclampsia (and I looked into it having been told I have a family history of it) but its only one of many symptons which would happen all at the same time - you've answered no to all the midwife's questions so unless any symptoms appear or the swelling gets worse, I wouldn't worry too unduly, but I know its hard not to.

Good luck

love Fiona xxxx

Hi Shell,

Poor you - don't know any other magic tricks I'm afraid.

Pre-eclampsia can be a problem, but like I said, swelling on its own doesn't necessarily mean a problem - its just one of those nice pregnancy symptoms.

If you are still really worried, phone the midwives again - they are the best ones to give you advise.

Hope you feel better soon.

Speak soon on here or FF

love Fiona xxxx

Shell,

try not to worry. I've had really swollen legs and ankles for the last couple of months.....wedding and engagement rings came off long ago too! At one of my recent appointments with the midwife she was a bit shocked by the swelling and when testing my urine found traces of protein, my blood pressure was slightly raised too (all signs of pre-eclampsia). She booked me in for an appointment at the hospital just to be on the safe side, but stressed that I shouldn't worry unduly as I wasn't getting any headaches, blurred vision or dots before my eyes. When I went to the hospital a week later for the check-up, everything was back to normal....other than the swelling.

As Fiona said, the swelling is just one of many signs of pre-eclampsia, it's also just a symptom of pregnancy, and it's far more likely that that's the case for you.

Try not to listen too much to worry mongers, just have a chat with your midwife, who hopefully can put your mind at rest.

Suzanne.x

Hi Shell,
I had to get my rings cut off last week at the jewellers. It might be worth you trying butter? Also you could get your dh to push your skin around the knuckle down while you try to work the ring off. The jeweller managed to get one of my rings off this way without cutting it. (Unfortunatly the others had to be cut!)
My local jeweller didn't charge me for this service, I just promised him that afterwards I would take the rings back to him to be resized.
Try not to worry about preclampsia as swelling is common during preganacy. High blood pressure is the real pre-eclampisa sign..maybe if you are worried you could speak to you midwife like the others have said.
I am sure all is ok but let us know how you get on!
Lots of love
Kirsty
xx

Hi Everyone

Just to let you know I have been to see my midwife and she tested my water and blood pressure and all was fine. I said I was concerned that it could be pre-eclampsia but she reassured me that I was ok and that everything was ok. I admit I was relieved and it does mean alot. She also listened to the babies heartbeat which was nice to hear and they managed to pick it up straight away.

I have had to have my wedding ring cut off, managed to get my eternity ring/engagement ring off but my wedding ring wouldn't budge. I have been advised that I can have it resized and it will cost be £20 which I think is good. They didn't charge me for taking it off but I am so happy now that its off and I am just going to chill out, I am going to TRY and not worry easier said then done.

Hope everyone is doing ok.

Love
Shell.
xx

Hiya Shell

I've got loads of swelling from knees down to toes, under bump, and hands (got my wedding rings off before they got too bad though!) and midwives are never bothered about it as long as my blood pressure and wee sample are ok. It's just one of the joys we have to put up with!

Glad everything else is ok with you.

Take care, Luv Rachel X
