One Failed IVF - but now how to afford adoption?

Of course I would love to keep trying more IVFs in order to have my own child.
But I don't see how I can continue doing that at a cost of 12,000, when I probably need to be saving money for adoption, which I understand runs bet. $20,000-$40,000.

?????

What in the world are people supposed to do? I can only go into debt so much. This whole infertility experience sucks on so many different levels.

Hi Michelle, my heart goes out to you! I truly feel bad & wish I could suggest something. One question: is it possible for you or your husband to get into a job, where the company pays for your health insurance. I am sure you have explored that option but just checking? If you have medical coverage thru work, you will not have to worry about paying from pocket. Second idea, though a bit far-fetched is that many people, go to countries like India for cheaper treatment options. There are many other countries out there who offer IVF & other fertility treatments at a much lower cost. Even though it seems far-fetched, many people [Indians, Americans etc] have chosen this route & have been successful. If that interests you, you could do some research on the msg board & on the internet. At the end of the day, which-ever option you choose, hope it works out in your best interest!!

Hi,

U can always try doing IVF in india. Here its as cheap as $3000-$4000. There are many clinicks i India who provide IVF at this cost...

Also check for TB in uterus because that is what many doctors tend to forget while going IVF.

I wanted to suggest two things, as I have looked into adoption as well but still find the cost overwhelming. First of all there is a $10k tax deduction if you live in U.S. which will help but first you have to shell out the $ out of pocket to get the baby... and the process can take over a year or two. But as bhav suggested doing IVF out of country, you might want to search on these boards for Rainbowmoms because I know she's doing it in Mexico for under $5k and that's a closer trip than India. Good luck either way!

Hey Michelle, My heart goes out to you and I understand your delema. I don't know where you live but i live in NY and go to a fertility clinic called Reporductive Specialist Of NY. We've had 3 IVF cycles with them. We coulnd't afford it either but there is a wonderful woman there, the financial coordinator, named Cheral who did everything she could to bring the cost down for us.

We had to pay out of pocket for the second one which came to just under $9,000 and Cheral was able to get all our meds donated to us, so we didn't have to pay a thing.

That cycle resulted in a pregnancy but ended in miscarriage at 15 weeks and because of that they discounted the next cycle for us by 20% which means we had only to pay $6,700 with all our meds donated to us.

But at the last second, Cheral got us into a program that the goverment had for infertility and we wound up only paying $2,800 for the whole thing which included all our meds and cryo for a year.

Our insurance covered only our monitoring and blood work and nothing else but my point is is that you can find the resources you need to continue. It will work one day if you keep trying and I know how hard it can be. My husband and I worked our butts off to be able to do this the last time but we did it and so can you. Our tax return went to it, tons and tons of over time at work. Don't give up yet. It's possible.

Totally busting in here, but was reading and wanted to suggest something.


I am leaving my job and getting on DH's insurance which does not cover IVF or anything for that matter. But I bumped into a form that described his health plans (while cleaning up after him). Guess what...one of the other choices provides 10K to infertility services. But open enrollment just happened. Then it occurred to me that once I lose my insurance we get to open enroll again and guess which plan I am picking??????

Anyway, I thought I had looked into all of this, but then found this new possibility. So just in case see if your employers have other plans with maybe worse coverage on some things but better for us!
