Going to be a Mum at last

Postby Alison » Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:06 pm

I'm a very rare visitor to this site these days - I realised with some horror that it is nearly 6 years since I started posting on these boards, part way through my 2nd IVF cycle, and that its getting on for 3 years since we finally got off the IVF merry-go-round, after 6 failed full cycles and 2 failed forzen cycles. Somewhere part through that process I with other ladies at a similar point lobbied for this "life after" board to mull over what next, and really appreciated the support I received at that stage, including a few meet-ups in London.

Anyway, like other people here, we have gone down the adoption route, and heard a week ago that we have been linked with three little girls who, assuming all goes smoothly, should be home with us in late May/early June. We've spent the last week giving friends and family the news we've longed to share with them about becoming parents, and basked in their joy and excitement for us. I'm guessing that in some ways this is the calm before the storm when the children actually move in with us!

I know that one or two people I used to post with, like ogr/becky (hi!) are still around, so wanted to let them know, and also hopefully give some encouragement to those who are currently trying to make that hardest of decisions about whether to give it one more go, or seek an alternative path to parenthood.

So, there is life after (unsuccessful) IVF - so pleased to read on here that others are treading similar paths.

Hi Alison,

This is so nice to hear. Congratulations !!!

My hubby and I are also planning to adopt and the council have advised us to wait for a few months before we can start the process as we just had an unsuccessful process.

How long did your process take for you ?

As we are Asians, it is also proving to be tricky to find a borough where there are Asian children to adopt. We are now also thinking of the inter country route.

Any advice ?

All the best,
Sita

Hi Sita, thanks for your kind email. Advice to wait a while before starting on the adoption route can feel difficult when you're itching to get going, but is probably sensible - it is a very different route to having a child, so do give yourselves time to explore the options. I'd spend some of that time ringing round different boroughs, as I'm sure you'll find some to bite your hand off as Asian adopters, I guess try boroughs with larger Asian populations.

Best of luck
