Flu Shot-

Postby faith77 » Sat Oct 03, 2009 7:11 pm

Anyone had their flu shot already? My next OB apt is Oct 13th, and I was planning on getting my flu shot then. But it seems the flu is already going around- so my nurse said I could go to walgreens and get it before my apt if Iwanted. So I did that today and now I am worried. I was just told that their are flu shots w/ preservatives and w/out- mine had preservatives. Is this the wrong one for pregnant women? or does it matter? I filled out the paperwork and checked the pregnant box - even discussed w/ nurse about my twins, etc... she said many pregnant women had been in for their shot. But now I am hearing about 2 different kinds and I am scared. Any info would help! Thanks!

My OB gave me my flu shot on my last appointment (Sept 16). I would not worry one little bit about the one you got at Walgreens. The only one that is wrong for pregnant women is the mist, which is a live virus, so you're fine!!! I will also get the H1N1 when it comes out because I teach high school and am taking no chances. Will you get that one when it becomes available?

Thanks for the encouraging and quick response to my post- I have put in a call to my OB's answering service- just to ease my mind, so I'm sure she will call me soon. As far as the H1N1 my OB told me @ my last appointment that they would be in in Oct and that they were reccomending to all pregnant patients, so I plan on getting it too.

So interesting how there are different views on the H1N1. My OB said for me NOT to take it because there is no evidence of no effect on pregnant patients. She was ok with me getting the regular flu shot which I received a few weeks ago. Anyone else have OBs advise against the H1N1?

Hi,

Regular Flu shot: No preservatives recommended for pregnany women although the pharmacy I went to said only CA and some other state mandated that, so I wouldn't worry even if you had the one WITH preservative.

H1N1: OB said to take it. Out of 100 pregnant women who got the virus, 20 died. So I' not taking any chances.

Hi Faith-
I asked my doctor about this last week. I did get my flu shot yesterday from Walgreens without the preservative. Basically, the precaution is that the preservative contains trace amounts of mercury. My doctor mentioned that it's such a small amount, that it's not anything to worry about if I couldn't get the preservative-free shot, she said that the shot with the preservative is better than not getting it at all! I'm sure it will be fine.

H1N1

Postby Tara2009 » Fri Oct 09, 2009 2:07 pm

Hi Ladies,

I am from the December 2009 thread. I thought I will give my OB's input on H1N1 shot. She said the one that is currently coming - the live virus type of short for H1N1 is not recommended for women. The injection type of shot is coming soon which is given in 2 courses. ONly that is recommended for pregnant women. So we have to wait until those injections come out.

You may want to check about H1N1 being given in two doses. Per the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), H1N1 is given in one dose.

Will two doses of vaccine be required?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of one dose of 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine for persons 10 years of age and older. This is slightly different from CDC’s recommendations for seasonal influenza vaccination which states that children younger than 9 who are being vaccinated against influenza for the first time need to receive two doses. Infants younger than 6 months of age are too young to get the 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.

Flu Shot

Postby D.grora » Fri Dec 04, 2009 11:12 am

I got the regular flu shot a couple weeks ago and unfortunately Ill be having her before the H1N1 will come out, otherwise Id definitely be getting that one, too, while pg. Ill be getting it afterwards for myself, but then the baby wont get the immunity from me, which Im sad about...but what can ya do? Thats why were having our whole family get the h1n1 and all the grandparents who will be around the baby a lot.
