turbutaline use??

turbutaline use??

Postby acornmom » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:57 pm

Just the thing I needed .... Ok here's the scoop. Back in Nov. (28 weeks with twins) I went into preterm labor. They used Magnesium and Indocin to treat it then switched me to procardia. I was in the hospital for 4 days then the day I came home I lost my mucous plug. Back to the hospital we went but came back the same night. NOW...at 30 weeks 6 days we went BACK to the hospital last night (30 weeks 5 days) because I was actually feeling the contractions (didn't back in Nov.) Well, I was having contractions every 3-4 minutes but they didn't change my cervix. I ended up getting turbutaline (2 doses) with all the lovely side effects... restless, nervous, racing heart beat (130-140's), dizziness. I go to the doctor tomorrow and have an ultrasound Tuesday. I just wondered what everyone else has experienced or any advice. I am already on bedrest and drink water like it is going out of style. Thanks for any and all replies!

Daisy,
Thank you so much for your support. I will take all the prayers we can get. The saving grace (keeping me sane) right now is the fact I feel our little ones moving ALL the time! LOL

Acorn- I have not used turbutaline, but after I read your post, I saw an episode of "A Baby Story" where she had to use it. Not sure if how easy it is to find past episodes, but I DVR'd it between 11/25-11/30. Best of luck to you in the next few weeks, and i'll pray that those babies hold on tight in there!

I was on the pill form of it from weeks 29-36 with my first. I used it as minimally as possible... just when the contractions got to be more than 8 per hour. It took a week or so but I adjusted to it and the side effects went away. I was taking it at least a couple times a day.

Make sure that you ask your doctor about its use, since turbutaline is not FDA approved for the treatment of pre-term labor / contractions. It is an off-label use that has just been widely accepted by most OBs as the "standard of care" for this situation. I was comfortable taking it, but everyone should make that decision for themself after talking to a doctor.

Good luck!

Hi Acornmom...

Been following your pregnancy since your first beta! Congrats!

I gave birth to G/B twins April 2008 and was on terbutaline from 26 weeks to 36 weeks when I had my c-section. Only 3 days before that I was having contactions exactly every 5 minutes...with no cervix change (was 2cm for weeks! with no effacing). I can tell you that I was very concerned with using it but after about 5 days my body adjusted (and my dosage was upped at 31 weeks to double) and my babies are 20+ months and very healthy... Take it - the risks of an early birth are way worse than anything the drug could ever do...

Be blessed...

Hi there. I was admitted to the hospital 2 days ago for early contractions ...not quite 30 weeks yet. So they gave me Terbutlane and then switched me to procardia every few hours in the hospital. Then they released me yesterday and gave me nifedipine evry 6 hours. It makes me very speedy and feel like my heart is going to pop out of my chest. UGH!!! I just hope my baby girl can stay calm for at least 6 more weeks!!
