bedrest twins mom

Postby myc » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:25 pm

hi, Just want to see how many of the twins moms are on bed rest.... I have been on modified bedrest since 30wks due to contractions and shortened cervical lenght. I've been taking Nifedipine to control my contractions and now I only have few a day. Currently im at 34 weeks, just did an U/S today and my cerivc looks good, like 3cm now. babies are 5 lb each!

It has been so difficult for me to move around, get up from bed, etc. I feel so much pressure around the pervic area....i really dont know how long i can hang on to.....i am a petite person...carrying these extra 30lb is really killing me.....

Anyway, good luck to all of you girls. :)

I am 29 weeks and have no sign yet of being put on bed rest. I have a complete placenta previa so most everyone is surprised I haven't been put on bed rest because of this plus the twins. I have been having a lot of BH contractions, but no real ones yet. I have been taking it easy spite no orders from OB to be on any rest. I just don't have the energy to do much anyway. I feel you on how uncomfortable it is. I am hoping to make it as far as you though I am not looking forward to things getting even more uncomfortable. I am a small person too, only 5 feet tall. Breathing sometimes can even be hard between my nose having sinus issues and my diaphram and lungs being squished. My babies are somewhere around 3 pounds by now. Yours being 5 is a great number! Even though it's not easy and secretly we wish it could be over already, it is our sacrifice as a mother to keep up what we have to in order to make sure that they cook as long as they can so they can be as healthy as they can be. :) Hang in there twin mama!

Steph, Actually, i had a lot of BH contractions too, my OB likeed to play safe, she asked me to stay in hospital for few days and gave me the steroid shot.
I suggest you rest as much as you can. Bedrest does work! My cervic have stayed around 3cm since i started bedresting
good luck to you!

Hey myc!

I am on modified bed rest right now (25w4d) and have been for a little over a week due to a lot of BH contractions. At my last U/S 4 weeks ago my cervix was over 4cm, and I have one tomorrow to check it (and babies) again. Great job getting to 34 weeks!! My goal is 36 and you are almost there. I have two kiddos at home so I am VERY blessed that my mom was able to come up and stay with us (she was always planning on coming up...she just had to come up a little earlier :D ).

I'm ready to get through the next 10-12 weeks. Then there will just be a whole new mess of craziness to deal with!

Hi twin Mamas!

When I was preggo I was put on modified bedrest at 28 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. I was put in the hospital on bedrest at 30 weeks and then had my boys at 34w2d. They were 5.08 and 4.05 lbs. The bigger of the two was in the NICU for 8 days and the smaller one for 13. Both were healthy and just had to learn how to eat. Bedrest sucks big time but the end is soo worth it! My first week in the hospital I cried almost daily I was soo upset that I was there, and then I decided I was being rediculous and started to take advantage of the extra sleep and being waited on for everthing!! I suggest you try to enjoy getting to be off your feet and sleep a bit because it is taken away oh so quickly! :D Good luck to you all and your babies. Lots of big healthy twin baby dust your way!

Hello! I am also expecting twins. I am entering my 26th week in a few days and have been on bed rest since my 17th week. It started off as strict bed rest due to marginal previa but as of my last ultrasound it has moved up and is no longer low. I am now on modified bed rest and will continue until the babies arrive, A precaution to keep these babies in as long as possible. I guess the extra weight, etc can put a lot of strain on the cervix. It can be tough and as we get bigger we get a lot more aches and pains and the breathing can be tough, I will say that I have not had much of a problem with swelling and I think bed rest is to thank for that. My blood pressure has been awesome too, I think that rest is a huge factor and can really determine the outcome. Just have to stay positive, remember that this is just temporary and the ending results are so worth it. good luck with everything!

Wow, reading everyone else's story I wonder about my doctors' advice that they give me. Like Dolo being put on strict bedrest because of a marginal previa. Not only was I not put on any restrictions, I was still allowed to have intercourse until I was too far along to risk it and mine was complete by the time I was 17 weeks. Then Myc you were put in the hospital and given a steroid shot to be safe when you were having a lot of BH. I was told to go home and not given anything. Then of course Babyluv you are on modified bedrest because of your BH. I was told 5 or more an hour go in to the hospital. I did and was told by them, 5 or more an hour for 2 hours. Well, I can easily have that many, but after my last experience, it would just be a waste of time. Due to my cervix tilting down and no one wanting to aggravate the previa by doing a pelvic, no one knows how long or short my cervix is since it can't be seen on an u/s. I see my OB on Tuesday and I think I am going to take these concerns to him. I am taking it easy, but I haven't put myself on bedrest. Any of you mamas have any advice?

Steph, I know what you mean.
I have been doing fFn test since 26wks. Fetal Fibronectin test can help to predict preterm labor, it gives me peace of mind too. Try to push your OB to do the test for you.
I have never thought i can make it to 34wk cuz my OB and the high risk doc both said I am too petite to carry twins ( i was 107lb before i got pregnant). So listen to your body, if you have a lot of BH, rest as much as possible, drink a lot of water, try to limit go up and down the staircase.
good luck!

Hi ladies. I was carrying twins until July 3. Some of you know me, of course. I wanted to pass on some insight I have learned since going into PTL and losing my twins at 23.3 weeks. If I can help just one other twin mommie keep her babies cooking until their due date, I will feel a bit less sad. Had I known these things before things went wrong, I would have encouraged (demanded!) my MFM to do some of the following things that help prevent PTL.

The biggest one that can help is P17 shots (NOT the same as progesterone inserts!). P17 helps calm the uterus. Others are the medications Procardia, Advil (yes, Advil!) and/or prophilactic antibiotics. I had issue with my cervix (incompetent cervix) that brought on my PTL, so afterwards I went to see a specialist. In addition to explaining what was wrong, he explained that the uterus is a smooth muscle and wants to contract naturally. Sometimes when pregnant, it can cause PTL if it does it too much. The things I listed above help calm the uterus. Then of course there are the official "stop contraction" drugs that many take prior to actually having too many contractions...not just when PTL has started. They are Tocolytics, Terbutaline (didn't work for me though when I was in PTL), Ritodrine, Nifedipine, Magnesium sulfate (very effective), Indomethacin, Betamethasone.

Just wanted to share this. Hope you are all feeling well and cooking those babies!

So I went to my OB and talked about the bedrest thing a bit. He isn't a believer in bedrest unless I am bleeding and at that point I will be spending bedrest in the hospital. I just have to take it easy, no strenuous activity and such. Basically the same thing I have been doing. If I keep having BH to drink water and lay down. Same thing I have been told before. There is no plan to give me any tests or shots of any kind since I am showing to be an A student in carrying these babies with a previa. At this point the babies are weighing around 3.5lbs each and growing fast, my belly measures full term at 40cm. So in all reality I could go any day now, but hopefully I can hold on for a few more weeks without bleeding. Ob wants to shoot for 36 weeks to do the c-section, but my motherly instict says I won't make it that far.

Karen - You are doing such a great job trying to help other moms, giving everyone knowledge! I can't wait to hear how your next cycle goes. Did you and DH decide on a fresh one or FET? With your new bionic cervix that you will have soon, there is nothing that will be standing in your way from your dreams! Miss you much dear friend and thank you for the advice. However, ob doesn't see the shots are needed in my case.

Myc - Thanks for the advice, but just like I just told Karen, the ob doesn't see me as needing these things. I am not sure if it is him being old fasioned or confident? Either way, I have to trust this guy. lol I don't see my peri until 9/27 if I make it that far. To see him sooner the ob has to refer me there and I don't see that happening. Lets hope that for some reason that the fluid and other things keep looking good enough to the ob each visit. I worry about those other things that the peri actually measures that the ob doesn't. I have to just think positive and believe that everything will be fine. :)

Steph, i am sure you will be fine. Once you pass 32 weeks, everything will be less stressful.
I dont know if my belly is in full term or not, all I know is i can barely walk to the bathroom now.....When i was at 30 wks, based on all the u/s measurment, they estimated my babies were weight around 3lb11oz and 3lb2oz.

I wish you the best! :D

Hi twim moms!! Sorry to crash your thread but I am really hoping I can get some advice or experiences. I am preggo with twins (8weeks) On Friday I started bleeding. It lasted for about an hour and half but since then I have only been spotting old blood. I went to the RE and both babies were still good w/ strong HB's. I am on bedrest this weekend and I go back for another US tomorrow morning. They were not able to see the source of any bleeding on the US. Have any of you bled in the early part of your pregnancy? I am worried sick and wish they knew why or where it is from. I have a feeling I have over done it for the past 2 weeks at work. Lots of bending, walking, and mild lifting (school just started) I am not going to do anything extra anymore and I am prepared to quit if necessary to keep us safe. I am hoping for a good outcome but they said it is not normal but both babies looked good. We will see what tomorrow brings. Any stories with any outcome is greatly appreciated.

Hi Katie G, Congrats on your pregnancy! Everyone's situation is different but for me personally I was placed on restrictions early on in my pregnancy, around 7-8 weeks. I started spotting and was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma. I had to just take it easy, pelvic rest, avoid lifting and bending and when possible, put my feet up. I had to stop going to the gym as well. That cleared up and as I got further along I was then diagnosed with marginal previa which can also cause bleeding. That is when I was placed on bed rest. As of now that has been resolved too. I am still on bed rest and will be until they arrive. There are so many things that can cause spotting/bleeding, what ever the cause is it can be so scary. I have learned through my own experiences that what worked best for me and was most important was rest. Carrying twins doubles everything, more risks involved, more weight to carry around, the body is going through a lot of changes... I feel that the restrictions, now bed rest has helped me have a healthy, and hopefully a full term pregnancy. Looking back early on, I noticed more spotting and cramping when I did a lot physically and I think my body was trying to tell me that I can't do the same stuff as I did before I was pregnant. You have to listen to your body and just take it easy. Every trimester there may be obstacles to face but when you get though each one, you feel relieved to know that you are a step closer to meeting your two little ones, so the sacrificing is well worth it. :) Good luck with everything!
