Donor Cycle Gone Wrong

Postby Nana11 » Tue May 31, 2011 5:10 pm

My DH and I went with a top clinic in the US for a donor egg cycle. Our young donor produced 9 eggs that fertilized. But after three days there was one normal embryo and a second that was ok. Everything else had very high fragmentation and after growing the embryos for 5 days the majority died and the two that survived were in bad shape. My husband does have poor sperm quality and quantity, but we used ICSI. And the Chromatin test we did on him was normal. Our donor was screened for all the egg quality tests and we were assured by the doctors that her egg quality was normal. I asked the doctor what happened but we did not get any coherent answers.
To tell you the truth we got better embryos during our own non-egg donor cycles. Any ideas? Is it possible that the donor did not take her trigger shot? She was triggered using Lupron. Or did she not take her meds accurately?

Nana, I'm really sorry about your bad experience. We just completed our 2nd DE cycle (different donors) and only received 2 blasts and 0 frosties. I really don't know where we will go from here.

What are your plans?

Sorry to hear about your experience. Egg donor cycles are suppose to have great results but I'm wondering whether the donors are actually taking the meds in our case, which may explain these unfortunate results.
Our first cycle cost over $40,000. I'm not sure I can talk my husband into another cycle. It breaks my heart because my DH would be a wonderful father.
Like you, I'm very confused and not sure what to do now.
Can I ask what the results were of your first donor cycle?
Did the doctors give you an explanation of why the two cycles failed to produce good quality embryos or more good quality eggs?

I'm sorry to hear about your negative donor experience. Had she ever been a donor before? If not, you may have jsut had bad luck with your donor. The reason I say this is because people assume all young healthy women will produce numerous eggs, but that is not always the case. When we first started IVF I was 22, the RE said I was perfect and would even be a good candidate for egg donation. We went through 4 fresh cycles and I never produced more than 10 eggs and that was on a very high dose of meds! My doctor was very suprised to see how I responded the first cycle.

If you can not afford to try another egg donation cycle you may want to look into embryo donation. We used donor embryos to have our little boy, and it is a lot cheaper than donor eggs. Good luck to you, don't give up! If you would like to read more about our story visit http://ivfsuccessstories.info/my-infertility-journey/
After 7 attempts (2 negatives/3 miscarriages), we have TWO miracle boys!! If you would like to hear our story, please visit http://www.ivfsuccessstories.info. Never give up, it can happen for you!!
