Postby Debs » Mon Oct 21, 2002 4:17 pm

Hello Girls

when I first went for IVF just over a year ago I got as far as having my FSH levels checked but I nerver got to know the results as we never went back after that (never had the cash).
Well today I had my first consultation (again) and the Doctor told me my results and they were 7.4 although because I had them over a year ago they are now invalid so have to have them done again can anyone tell me a bit more about these levels and what is a good level and so on as not much atually sunk in in his office. The graet news is though he said I should get to start the treatment around end of december / early january so I am well chuffed at the moment anyway thats enough babbling from me bye for now.

FSH Confusion!!!

Hi Debs - I'm no expert on this but from memory FSH levels increase as you get older/towards the menopause so you're looking for a low level. I think they start to get concerned when its above about 13-15 but I may be wrong, so yours sounds absolutely fine, and the fact that they are saying you can start in the next couple of months is a good sign. Redoing the blood tests is also absolutely routine, so I'm sure you've know reason to worry. Good luck!

Alison

FSH Confusion!!!

Hi ..
FSH is a hormone which is released to the ovaries from the pituity gland called Folicle stimulating hormone which basically makes the eggies grow and mature..

The older you get the rather the more depleted your egg storage or quality is the higher the level increases...

I have a high level for my age (26) and my level is 12.4. When you have a higher level you tend to need more drugs (I am on 4 ampouls of Menagon) as your ovaries need more drugs to get stimulated to make the eggies grow..

The levels of FSH can increase and decrease in certain periods of your life..there are many remedies to increase it but only Agnus Cactus is thought to decrease it (although you can't take it whilst tryiung to conceive!)

Sometimes you are asked to go for a repeat test if your result is higher or lower than average for your age as it is sent in pulses and they may have taken the blood test on an extreme pulse..

I hope that this makes sense...I think that I have got it right!!

Luv Becky B
