Diagnosed: Severe Male Infertility - anyone else?

Postby Sher8 » Thu Mar 10, 2005 4:43 pm

Hello, I am a new member to the board and am impressed with the kind of support that goes on here. I am 36 years old. We have been diagnosed with severe male infertility. It appears that my husband is a rare find, I guess I knew that when I met him. :)

We will be taking our first attempt at IVF/ICSI after his sperm aspiration next week. I am hoping all goes well and the sperm are in good shape. Although articles have shown that ICSI is the answer to those with severe male infertility so I am hopeful.

Anyone else in a similar situation.

Hi! My husband had his sperm aspiration last month and it went well. However, we were not prepared for the amount of pain he was in after the procedure. He couldn't move for about three days. Hopefully your husband will have a better experience.

I am now on day 5 of IVF. The egg retrieval will be next Tuesday or Wednesday and the transfer will be Friday or Saturday. I am very nervous and excited at the same time.

Good luck! I hope they get lots of good sperm! :D

Thanks for the info. I assume this is your first attempt at IVF. I guess I won't tell my husband about the pain part. Don't want to worry him any more than he is already.

Let me know how it goes and best of luck to you!

To nicolamark

My husband has no sperm in his ejaculate. Sperm aspiration is a procedure they do to get sperm from the testes - a biopsy. So even men with severe cases of infertility are now able to have children.

See http://www.infertile.com/treatmnt/treats/spasp.htm for more info on this topic.

If you DH has not had MESA or PESA procedure, he may have sperm available for IVF/ICSI.

I know all about biopsy's MESE and PESA etc...
DH was due to have one but didnt want that in the end, so we both opted for DOnor sperm.
Looked at your link......Thanks!!

My DH is scheduled for the biospy in the next two weeks. Doner sperm is another option. We just did not consider this. The most important thing is going with what you are both comfortable with. Yes, I am in US - Pittsburgh, PA.

Hi Sher8

my dh had a vasectomy so the only option for us was Surgical Sperm Retrieval. The surgeon we used has a 100% success rate and he retrieved enough for 10 attempts. Aspiration failed due to blockage so he had a biopsy (as do about 40% of these cases) He had no pain at any point and sailed through the whole thing.

With everything the woman has to go through, this surgery is nothing at all. Even if it had been worse i know he would have tolerated it because it is very important to us to have a child which is biologically our own.

18 of my 23 eggs fertilised with the retrieved sperm but i had to have a total freeze due to OHSS. My FET just failed and i have another one scheduled for April.

Good luck to you and please ask if there is anything else you want to know.

My dh just had sperm retrieval by testicular biopsy yesterday. It is confirmed that there is plenty of sperm. We were really happy. In two days, we will find out how it handles the freeze/thaw process. Seems like just when you finish one step, you have another to overcome. My saline ultrasound is next week and then we will be ready for our first attempt of IVF/ICSI. Better safe than sorry. . .

Hi...glad to hear DH's biopsy went well. I hope you let us know how the freeze/thaw step goes.

You've got it in one, this is a serious of slow, careful steps. Just when you think you've made it through one, the next looms. That's why so many of us are addicts to this board. The understanding and support from others as we make our way alone is vital.

Good luck with tmt.
Debra.

Hi

I'm so pleased it went well for your dh. I know that there are lots of steps to go through but i find each step exciting. it's the waiting around in between that's the stressful bit for me!

wishing you lots of luck at every stage

love

The freeze/thaw went well and I also had a saline ultrasound with good results. So I just started my first cycle of IVF a couple of days ago. You know. . .the shots are not that bad. I was so afraid of that. My dh gives them to me every night. Now he thinks he is really good at it. :) I feel it best to keep things light.
