Is change of clinic after 1st try advisable?

Postby Fellena » Sat Oct 01, 2005 2:06 pm

Hi, everyone. I've done my 1st cycle and the blood test on day 27 was positive. both my husband and I were so happy since it would be our first baby after we got married for 10 years.

But I had a miscarriage at week 5. It made my heart broken. Everything went on so smoothly, the egg collection, the transfer (I had 3 embroy transferred and they were all good-grade). I don't know what went wrong.

I'm now waiting to do the next cycle.

But recently, i happened to know my clinic, which was recommendated by a friend, has one of the lowest sucess rate in town.

I'm thinking of changing to another clinic. But wondering whether it's a good idea, since there may be some experience accumulated from the first cycle.

If I do change the clinic, will my next doctor be able to get my file on the 1st cycle from my previous doctor?

I am very sorry for your loss:)

In most countries your medical notes are legal documents that you are entititled to see and get copies of. You can either ask your clinic to write a summary or take them copies yourself.

Before you do that however you should look at the criteria each clinic uses to measure success. For instance, some clinics count success as seeing a heartbeat, even if the pregnancy does not continue. My clinic counts success as a pregnancy that reaches 20 weeks. You may also find that some clinics exclude certain age groups or categories of diagnosis which may make their stats look better. Make sure you are comparing apples with apples.

Good luck:)

Josie

Hi there
I would be inclined to agree with Josie. Apart from anything else, you achieved a positive pregancy 1st time with this clinic, which is good news and very lucky for a 1st cycle, despite the fact that it did not follow through, which i am very sorry about. I would stick with your clinic, and allow them to use the knowledge they have gathered about you for your second attempt. You will get there, it is just a long journey! Don't make any rash decisions and look after yourself until you are ready for round 2. It is a big enough ordeal as it is starting a new cycle, without the emotional implications of having to re-introduce yourself to and re-familiarise yourself with a new clinic.
good luck
