NOT SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT! HELP

Postby nancy1 » Thu May 06, 2010 2:08 am

Hi everyone,

I'm ready for feedbacks from anyone who's baby sleeps through the night.
Here is my situation.
My peanut turns 6 months on mother's day and is still waking up at least 3 times a night.
We give him dinner (solids now) at around 6:30, then bathe her at around 8:30. Give him some oatmeal and milk and he goes to sleep at about 9-9:30. THen wakes up at 1 or 2, then 3 or 4, then 5 or 6.
Hubby and I are exhausted.
He eats well during the day and takes about 3 half hour naps.
WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG?! :-)
Would appreciate any feedback.

Nancy,

You are not doing anything wrong, and there probably isn't much you can do. I know it is easier said than done, but try to be patient for a few more weeks. One fine day your baby will start sleeping through the night. My baby is 5 months old. Until last month, she was getting up 2 times at night. All of a sudden one day she slept for 9 hours and it continued. I didn't do anything. But couple of things I can suggest are:

1. Don't put your baby to sleep unless she is really tired and sleepy.
2. Keep her active in the evening by playing games, taking her out for stroller trips etc so that she will get a little tired.

Hang in there. It will happen soon.

I have no solutions. Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone. At 4 mos., DD woke 2-3 times a night. Now, at 7 mos., she wakes every 1-3 hours. I have no idea why. We used to swaddle, but she's too old and strong for it. I've been so tired that I started bringing her into bed w/ us. (Maybe this taught her bad habits and exasperated the problem; although I do love the snuggles.) Anyw,ay she's back in the crib we're trying baby whisperer method. Also, starting to have a little Mommy clingy-ness so DH comforting gets her even more riled up. Still up 4 x last night, but I did get one 4 hour stretch!

I'm tired, but I love her so much. Good luck.

I think its normal for babies up to 1 yr old to wake up this many times during the night. My dd was sleeping hru the night for 2 months until a week ago and now she wakes up 2 times a night once for food and once to play. The other night she was up 4 hours!!!!  I know what you mean about being tired i go to work so i depend on sleep but unfortuantely its not our world lol   I think that no matter what we do babies will get whatever sleep they need and if someones baby sleeps 3 months straight thru the night doesnt mean that that will not change i know from my own experience!!! I did notice thou that if she doesnt take a nap after 3 she sleeps more (she goes to sleep around 7:30-8) so maybe try keeping him up longer before bed.

Your baby is still figuring out sleep, our boy woke up a bunch until 13 mos old, he was breastfeeding every 3 hours at night. I then decided to wean the night feedings and thought it was going to be a battle. After 3 nights he didn't nurse at night anymore! We keep things pretty quiet when he wakes up and dark. One thing with us is he won't sleep before 9 pm then will sleep until 8 am. It is exhausting but it doesn't last forever! Good luck!

Have you read a book called "Baby Wise?" It's all about giving your baby a good night of sleep . . . it might help :D

Hi ladies,

thank you so much for everyone's input.
MIRACULOUSLY, for the past 4 days, he's been sleeping about 7 hours, waking up, getting 4 ounces of milk, then sleeping another 2 hours. It might just be temporary, but I will enjoy EVERY SECOND of it while it last!!! :-)
Have a great weekend everyone.

May be any thing wrong with him but your baby can't tell you any thing.
In these cases internally babies have some problems in their body but they can't tell,
So, consult with your doctor.

Every baby is different, and there may not be anything you can do. My little boy slept through the night at about nine weeks and continued to until about 9 months. We are having some issues now, but he has always been a great sleeper. I do feel that his schedule helped him to sleep through the night, because the times that we tried different things he would always wake up.

Here is what we did:
- solids at 5:30/6:00
-bottle at 7
-asleep by 8:00/8:30
-woke him up everynight at 10:30 for bottle--put him straight back in bed after bottle

To me the 10:30 bottle was the key, he has since done away with this last bottle, but we used this schedule until about 10 months old. The times I tried to let him stay asleep, he always woke up.

Good luck to you!

As others have said, you're not doing anything wrong. It's natural for babies to wake repeatedly through the night. Our daughter finally slept through the night at aroun a year and a half, I believe; our son, at 13 months, is still waking constantly.

Just following up. We tried a million gentle techniques. Google "sleep lady" -- her method helped a bit. Anyway, nothing really did the trick and it was frustrating to read the tips where the "experts" say things like, "be sure to put her to bed sleepy, but not sleeping." And we were like, "yeah, right, that's impossible." But, then of her own accord, at about 16 months, she just got it and started sleeping through. Now at 18 months, she now goes down fairly easily after our routine of reading and songs and sleeps from 7:30/8 to 7ish -- except for the odd night of teething madness. So there's hope -- t doesn't feel like it, but sleep will come to you too. (We're still struggling to get her to take a decent length nap. Oh well.)

Best wishes.

My daughter is 16 months old now and she started sleeping through the night only 3 months back. I think at around 3 or 4 months old, they first start sleeping through the night. Then comes the teething problem. They keeping waking up. Also those couple of months before they start walking, they wake up several times at night. After they start walking, the sleep slowly gets smoother. That's what I heard.
