'hCG" and "Beta" are the same thing. It's a large molecule called beta-hCG. hCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. It's one hormone that the embryo produces as it implants. It signals the corpus luteum of the ovary to continue producing progesterone, which in turn prevents menses. hCG is the embryo's way of telling the mother "I'm here, don't have a period now!!!"
We test for it in the blood or urine to identify pregnancy. Just about any detectable level can indicate pregnancy. At a given point in time, the level can be used to roughly predict the number of developing embryos.
The levels are monitored in order to infer the status of the pregnancy. hCG will roughly double every couple of days for most healthy pregnancies. If it does not, then either a faulty measurement was made, or else something is wrong with the pregnancy. Typically it means the pregnancy is spontaneously aborting.
However, I've seen it drop a little, like you are talking about, and then resume rising. Not common, but it happens. I often wonder if this reflects losing part of a multiple pregnancy. Suppose three initially implant, and two fail, would this cause a brief drop in hCG, while the third can go on to delivery? Believable, but who can say?
Another thing that "abnormally rising titers" can indicate is an ectopic pregnancy. That's a pregnancy that attaches anywhere besides the uterus. These are commonly detected by lower than normal hCG values. Your doctor will be surely keeping an eye peeled for this possibility.
I just wanted to say thank you for replying to my other post. That is so wonderful that the one embie worked for you guys. So there is hope and you guys are examle of it.
I also think you must be such a great husband to be so concern with all this IVF stuff and so supportive of your wife, baby........
Wish you best luck! I will be transfering my "ONE" embie tomorrow morning.
Try not to worry too much - I know it's difficult but I'm sure your dr would tell you if he/she was concerned.
If it's any help, I was told that the numbers are in GUIDELINE bands. My EPU clinic told me that they've seen lots of women whose numbers don't double every few days, or even whose numbers are low and who have gone on to have perfectly normal babies. The same goes for the other way. It's a waiting game I'm afraid... Good to hear the first scan went well though
Take care

Hey Mr & Mrs Tony..how are you feeling, im great i have to say im expecting a neg tomorrow not being down or negative about it but i feel nothing now not even sore boobies zip diddlie squat....so im a little prepared my hubbys still got a spring in his step so im more worried how he will react to it hes a wonderful man who deserves a baby....
any way i wanted to say Ghost what a shocker...i love your posts your a wealth of information and usually you manage to put minds at ease but that one was a doosie ... most of that doesnt apply to them they had a scan they know there embie is right where it should be they had one put back and that one is snuggled in the right place the golden word is most not all rise and continue to rise without a dip i have read on here of several women whos #'s dipped a little and are still carrying healthy babies.... could it be that the progesterone shot was incomplete in some way would this affect the #'s i know i have missed bits of mine after hubby stuck me wrong with the needle (in a bruised area)and i pulled away?????
have a great day.... hugs debz

I'm not a physician. I am just a scientist who works on optimizing IVF procedures.
Sorry to have been so blunt, I was a little pressed for time and had to go pick up my daughter. So I posted something I should have edited some more. Aunty Pebbles is right of course. People come to this board more for support than for information.
You posted that your hCG dropped slightly, 1290 to 1276 in a 4-day period. Theoretically, should have risen to about 5,000. This is some cause for concern by your physician.
That said, please don't worry about these details of hCG ("beta") values. Let the doctor do all of the worrying. Your job is to relax and follow the doctor's instructions. Worrying does not help, and the physician has more than enough tools to figure out exactly what is going on at all times.
ghost..hi wow 5000??that is a lot....i don't know what the hcg is today...but our next test is on july the 10th so to my opinnion lot can happen by then....is it ok to wait this long ??or i really should start to worry and ask the md's for an early hcg test??what if by the 10th is really low?? if so well it be to late ??
but our md. told us not to worry.....well once again it is easy for him to say....

Of course it's easy for him to say, but you must try and follow his advice. Keep positive and enjoy the knowledge that you know a baby's in there
