Newbie and looking for support

Post by brekkemdb »

Hello fellow IVFER"s. My name is bridget, i am 32 for another month anyway. We are currently in our first round of ivf. To give a little history about me. I had a tubal ligation after my son was born in 1997. I then found the man of my dreams (most days anyway) and decided we want to have a child together. I had a Tubal Reversal in 2001. We then went through 3 rounds of IUI with no sucess. We then found out that my tubes were closed. Our only option was another Reversal or IVF. Well choose IVF. We borrowed money against our house as our ins doesn't cover anything.
I did almost 6 weeks of BCP. Followed by 3 weeks or so of Lupron. I was then put on Gonal F 300 units for 9 days. I just have my egg retrieval on tuesday. They collected 28 eggies. Of those 28 eggies onlly 22 were mature or looked good. Of those 22 only 12 fertilized correctly. I started my progrestrone IM shots last night and go in for transfer friday morning.
Our doc only wants us to transfer 2 embies--mostly do to our ages and what our fertility problem is.
I guess my question is why would 10 of our little eggies not fertilize? Is that average about normal to have that many not fertilize?
I look forward to getting to know all you ladies and wish you all the best of luck. This IVF journery is such an emtional rollarcoaster.

Hi Bridget,

Welcome to the message board! I only joined two days ago and can't believe how good and helpful it is!
I am afraid I can't answer your question as to if the amount of eggs fertilised is normal as I have not got that far yet, but I just read your story and wanted to say Hi and wish you all the luck in the world for a positive result and I will keep my fingers crossed for you on friday!!!

Take Care

Hello all
This is such a great source of support while going through all of this fertility stuff. Good luck on transfer. I wish you the best. My first ICSI/IVF was with 2 embryos as well. I am 31 and that is how many they transfer for that age group. RE told me I would have to selectively reduce if I had triplets and for me I could do this. I went with 2.

I too am waiting until the right time for FET. I look forward to hearing how yours goes.

Hi Bridget, welcome! Sounds to me like you got a good number of eggs and embryos - pretty close to my numbers in fact. I started with 20 eggs, 11 fertilized and 7 made it to day 3. They put back two and froze the other 5. Now that I'm pregnant (with twins) I think alot about those 5 embies and what we'll do with them. On some level I feel like we need to give each one a chance ... we'll have to wait and see I guess. For some reason I didn't understand that they would fertilize all the eggs and we'd have some actual embryos frozen, I was thinking we'd just have frozen eggs. Boy was I dumb...

Best of luck to you! And cheeky monkey and luvbabies and Tanya too!!

Tanya I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage, that must have been so hard. I wish you all the best with your upcoming FET!!

Cheeky--thanks for the welcome. So where are you at in your ivf cycle?
Luvbabies--sorry to read that your first round didn't work. I will thinking of you for your FET and praying that this round does the trick and those little ones stick this time. This coming thursday is your transfer? Woohoo that is right around the corner. : )
Tanya--i am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I totally appreciate adn understand your thoughts on triplets. We talked about transferring 3 but the thought of 3 babies at once made me so nervous--and really freaked out dh and yes selective reduction is something we can't do.
racquel--congrats on your pgy. Twins with 2 embies--yeah.

I had my transfer this am--now is the waiting game. We have 9 day 1 embies in cyro--and 1 extra from today will be froze on day 5. My clinic believes that freezing is best on day 1 or day5--have to assume they know what they are doing. I am a bit crampy still this evening but doing ok. Wow to see those little ones be put back in my uterus on the US screen was something else. Both myself and dh cried.
Baby dust to all

Bridget,

Good luck! This was my first IVF/ICSI but the same thing happened to me. THey retrieved 16 and by the time I got to transfer I only had two. I was devastated as I wanted to freeze for comfort. I was also confused as our problem is a male factor and I was suprised so many either didn't fertilize or divide. Anyhow, I asked the same questions as you and everyone said it was normal. In regular circumstances (natural pregnancy) it does not always happen the first time or second. A lot has to happen for those eggs to divide, fertilize, implant. Your clinic seems typical and good. Relax and take care of yourself.

BTW- with my only two eggs, I got a BFP on August 14th and go in in 5 days to hear a heartbeat and find out if it is twins. They have a hunch it is. So, moral of story, one/two good eggs is much better than 16 average eggs.

Love,

Sam

Bridget:

Fertilization rates vary a lot. There is no good explanation why, in most cases. The procedures are pretty standard, so I would not suspect clinical incompetence.

The fertilization rates you report are on the low side, but not really unusual.

My clinic also freezes on either day 1 or day 5/6. There is good rationale for each approach, and we are somewhat undecided on the matter. Yours is the first I've heard of both approaches for one patient in one cycle. It seems your clinic is not hesitant to do a little extra work on your behalf. Good.

Good luck with your cycle. Don't overlook those frozen embryos, as they work quite often these days. They can prime the endometrium (uterus) much better for a frozen (or donor) cycle, without all those extra hormones from ovarian stimulation you have in a fresh cycle.

Sam congrats on your BFP--that is awesome. Ladies like yourself give me hope everyday when i read your stories. 5 more days till you find out if you are carrying twins--how very exciting. Keep me posted would love to hear about it.

Ghost--as i have been scanning this board for sometime before i actually joined i see you are the resident ivf guru. : ) You have given so many so much info i and they appreciate it. We were a bit surprised about the fertilize results but....like you said even in "normal" pregnancy it offten times take many eggs to get just the right to fertilize. We are very hopefully that one of these little ones will stick. Gotta be hopefully in the whole process. The waiting it going to be hard but so worth it in the end. We have for the most part been happy with our clinic a couple things they do per procedure we haven't liked but what do you do. One thing and with you being so knowledgable about ivf you might be interested in; they grade the embies but do NOT tell us until after the pgy results. Their reasoning is that if they put back embies that maybe aren't the best people will feel that their cycle will be a failure before they even give it a chance--power of positive thinking i think is what they are getting at. Does that make sense?

Bridget,

It might make a lot of sense. Worry and stress might change blood flow in the uterus, for example. I don't know, although there are many studies of uterine blood flow, I don't know any that relate it to stress.

The patient's job:

1. Relax.
2. Follow physician's instructions.

Hi Bridget,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but have not been around for a few days, I was just catching up with things and wondered how things are going with you? I read that you had your transfer done and wanted to let you know I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending you lots of baby dust!! :D
I just had my first cycle of IVF cancelled as I producced too many follicles and they were worried about OHSS and so they cancelled me the day before my ER!! Needless to say I have been a bit fed up but am trying to get back on the positive thinking!!!!
Anyway, hope you are well and taking it easy!!

Take Care

Cheeky--i am so sorry that they had to cancel your cycle i can't even begin to imagine how heart breaking that probably is. You are in my thoughts.
Thanks for thinking of me. Well i just couldn't wait any longer and i took a hpt this afternoon. I am 7 days past a 3 day transfer--i think i worded that right. Well anyway i got a faint ++++, i think just maybe i might be pg. I bought 4 more tests tonite and plan on testing rest of the weekend and continue until the beta on 9/13. Bridget
