Hello fellow IVFER"s. My name is bridget, i am 32 for another month anyway. We are currently in our first round of ivf. To give a little history about me. I had a tubal ligation after my son was born in 1997. I then found the man of my dreams (most days anyway) and decided we want to have a child together. I had a Tubal Reversal in 2001. We then went through 3 rounds of IUI with no sucess. We then found out that my tubes were closed. Our only option was another Reversal or IVF. Well choose IVF. We borrowed money against our house as our ins doesn't cover anything.
I did almost 6 weeks of BCP. Followed by 3 weeks or so of Lupron. I was then put on Gonal F 300 units for 9 days. I just have my egg retrieval on tuesday. They collected 28 eggies. Of those 28 eggies onlly 22 were mature or looked good. Of those 22 only 12 fertilized correctly. I started my progrestrone IM shots last night and go in for transfer friday morning.
Our doc only wants us to transfer 2 embies--mostly do to our ages and what our fertility problem is.
I guess my question is why would 10 of our little eggies not fertilize? Is that average about normal to have that many not fertilize?

Hello newcomer!
I too had 11 fertilize but from 22. I'm not sure of the answer I will ask however on my next appt. Last IVF round didn't work for me but I'm going through a frozen embryo transfer this THURSDAY (We banked the rest of the bunch) This will be a whoooole new way for me so I'm really setting my hopes up hi.

This is such a great source of support while going through all of this fertility stuff. Good luck on transfer. I wish you the best. My first ICSI/IVF was with 2 embryos as well. I am 31 and that is how many they transfer for that age group. RE told me I would have to selectively reduce if I had triplets and for me I could do this. I went with 2.

Hi Bridget, welcome! Sounds to me like you got a good number of eggs and embryos - pretty close to my numbers in fact. I started with 20 eggs, 11 fertilized and 7 made it to day 3. They put back two and froze the other 5. Now that I'm pregnant (with twins) I think alot about those 5 embies and what we'll do with them. On some level I feel like we need to give each one a chance ... we'll have to wait and see I guess. For some reason I didn't understand that they would fertilize all the eggs and we'd have some actual embryos frozen, I was thinking we'd just have frozen eggs. Boy was I dumb...

Luvbabies--sorry to read that your first round didn't work. I will thinking of you for your FET and praying that this round does the trick and those little ones stick this time. This coming thursday is your transfer? Woohoo that is right around the corner. : )

In regular circumstances (natural pregnancy) it does not always happen the first time or second. A lot has to happen for those eggs to divide, fertilize, implant. Your clinic seems typical and good. Relax and take care of yourself.

Fertilization rates vary a lot. There is no good explanation why, in most cases. The procedures are pretty standard, so I would not suspect clinical incompetence.
The fertilization rates you report are on the low side, but not really unusual.
My clinic also freezes on either day 1 or day 5/6. There is good rationale for each approach, and we are somewhat undecided on the matter. Yours is the first I've heard of both approaches for one patient in one cycle. It seems your clinic is not hesitant to do a little extra work on your behalf. Good.

We were a bit surprised about the fertilize results but....like you said even in "normal" pregnancy it offten times take many eggs to get just the right to fertilize. We are very hopefully that one of these little ones will stick. Gotta be hopefully in the whole process. The waiting it going to be hard but so worth it in the end. We have for the most part been happy with our clinic a couple things they do per procedure we haven't liked but what do you do. I just had my first cycle of IVF cancelled as I producced too many follicles and they were worried about OHSS and so they cancelled me the day before my ER!! Needless to say I have been a bit fed up but am trying to get back on the positive thinking!!!!

Well anyway i got a faint ++++, i think just maybe i might be pg. I bought 4 more tests tonite and plan on testing rest of the weekend and continue until the beta on 9/13. Bridget
