OUCH, my gums!!

Hello ladies,

I woke up this morning with a strange taste in my mouth... when I went to check what was up, I saw that my gums were bleeding... (not gallons of blood , but a bit from everywhere). Can it be from the pregnancy??
Until now I have been really lucky with my teeth, very strong and not 1 cavities. SO i am scared that they will all fall off!! What can I do? Is it a big problem? As you see, I dont know much about teeth problems...

hi souris....

bleeding gums during pregnancy is quite common... its all the hormones that are flowing through your body....
visit your dentist regulary...... thats the best option...
im suffering bleeding gums and ive already had a tooth removed a few weeks ago as i got an abcess which refused to clear up with antibiotics....

My gums bled like crazy through my pregnancy. Everytime I brushed or flossed. And lots of blood too. I made it through the pregnancy with no teeth issues though and now that I've had the babies they aren't bleeding like that anymore. So yeah, it's normal. My dentist said it was normal too.

Kareen, I am sorry to hear that you had to have one teeth taken out

I will definitely go and have a check up done, I also bought a soft tooth brush... still bleeding bit less sore...

It's apparently one very common pregnancy symtom unfortunately - you just have to take extra care...

I think a wee bit of my wisdom tooth may have chipped off

but I won't have anything done anyway until after the birth so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed...

Try a good mouthwash too...Hope things are better

Hey.. I am a little late responding to this... This is right up my alley since I am a general dentist...It is called Pregnancy Gingivitis and it is caused by the extra hormones raging through your body.... Flossing is KEY!!! Yes you will bleed like a stuck pig for a few days but "pink in the sink is good" means you are brushing your gums as you should!!! If you could invest in an electric toothbrush that would be great... Oral B has some great ones... here in the states they run from about 20 dollars up to about 130 dollars. A good one to get is the 8850 series... ( I think that is the number- I just ordered them on Friday and I honestly can't remember the type.. It is the "Professional" ones. I would stay away from the battery operated ones... Personally for me the brush heads are way to hard for my tender mouth!!! You can't go wrong with the Name Oral B though.... The mouthwash I would use would be the one put out by Crest... It has no alcohol in it whatsoever.. It is called Crest Pro Health. Teflon coated floss is great too.. Good names are Glide or Oral B.... Great toothpaste with triclosen in it is Colgate Total.... That is my favorite.... If you can,get your teeth cleaned by the dds every six months unless you have periodontal disease( loss of bone) . There have been studies out that state women with perio disease have an increased risk of preterm labor. If you have perio disease- see your dds every 3 to 4 months for special cleanings. Sometimes the pregnancy gingivitis can lead into a pregnancy tumor on your gums.. Not to worry this is just an overgrowth of your gum tisssue and it resolves on its own after the birth of your baby... It is Ok to have xrays while pregnant... Most of the time women prefer not to have them and that is ok... BUT IT IS OK... I usually place 2 lead shields over my patients to make them feel better.. Yes.. when I was pregnant, I did have a couple of xrays done because we/I am watching a tooth for a cavity... (Bad dentist girl I know!!) If I have pregnant pt with an abcess, I know exactly what to do, however I always tell the pt I will call the OB(which of course I do) advise them of the situation and confirm/consult with them the antibiotics and or pain meds I will be prescribing for them and of course I document all that... Not only taking care of one patient, but two!!!!

Remember.... FLOSS!!! Total Colgate toothpaste and Crest Pro Health Mouth Rinse!!!!!! and smile.... You are creating a beautiful baby!!!!!!!!!
