Asthma Control & Pregnancy?

Post by cmoscar »

Hello,

I am currently one day shy of 11 weeks pregnant with our third child. On Friday, my asthma flared up and stayed that way. I was admitted to the hospital on Saturday only to be released on Sunday. Monday, I went to OB and she wanted to admit me again, but the asthma specialist said no. They now have me on nebulizer treatments every 4 hour (Xopenex), Prednisone 2x per day, Pulimcort 2x per day, and all of this is on top of the meds for the bloodclotting disorder I have. In all, I am taking 7 different medications and I am worried about what this could mean for the baby. In all of my previous pregnancies, my asthma went into remission. The asthma doctor told me that I am having a kind of allergic reactions to the rising hormone levels. My oxygen levels have been very low as well through this ordeal and I am worried what that has done to the baby. I have an appointment with the OB tomorrow, but I am worried now and would love any advice you might be able to provide.

Thank you,
Racheal Matos

I don't have any advice for you Racheal but you will be in my prayers and I hope the OB will have some insight for you!

Hi Rachel

I have crohns disease and in all my other pregnancies it has gone into remission but not this one so I am also taking prednisone and have been since about week 13. I am taking 8 5mg tables a day (so 40mg a day). I've been told they will not harm the baby, the only thing it harms is my sugar levels (I'm also in insulin dependant diabetic). I usually take about 90 units a day and I'm now on 406!

I can't answer for the rest of the medication you are taking but I'm sure if there was any concern about any of them harming the baby they would have told you of the risks. They have told me there is more danger of me not taking the steroids than taking them. Hopefully you will only have to be on them for a short period of time. I'm now on them until the end!

Best of luck and I hope your OB answers any of your worries tomorrow.

Jo

Thank you so much! The prednisome is the one I am most worried about because it is so strong! As far as the rest of my pregnancy, I have been told I will continue taking the pulmicort, albuteral and they will add flonase once they stop the prednisone. They did tell me that it is more dangerous for the baby that my oxygen levels get too low than anything the the drugs can do. I just hate taking medications during pregnancy. I have never taken anything more than prenatals until this pregnancy and it seems wrong.

Its funny though, I had my first nose bleed ever this afternoon and it scared the heck out of me. I called the OB's office and they said sometimes it happens during pregnancy and that there is nothing to worry about. It seems like this baby is going to do everything to make me worry!

Thanks again for the information. I will sleep a little better tonight and have tons of questions for my OB tomorrow.
