Trouble Sleeping

Post by Helen Reid »

I am having real trouble sleeping at the moment it has went on for about a week now. I cannot get comfy in bed at all. My sis says its because i am not doing anything during the day. But during the day i could sleep at the drop of a hat but i don,t because i think it won,t make me sleep at night. you know that way when your lying in bed and you don,t know if you have been sleeping or whether your still awake. I toss and turn its driving my dh up the wall. I have even got up with him in the morning (6am) to see if that helps but it doesn,t. It says in the book at about 10 weeks that you may not sleep well.
Has or is anyone else having this problem.

I have also been asked if i would like to go back to work 2 days a week. In a way i want to go back (i am bored) but i am also vvvscared.I said i would think about it and wait until after my 12 week scan.
I am a chef and on my feet all day and although i would be careful it just takes one thing. i just thought an outsiders opinion would help. My dh says its up to me he doesn,t want me to tyre myself out.

Hi Helen

I found at 10 weeks I could sleep all day but spent most of the night up and down to the loo! Try changing your pillows. My dh bought me one of these pregnancy pillows (its like a big long fat sausage - its like having another person in the bed!) and I've managed to have some great sleep snuggling up to that!

The other thing to do, if you cant' sleep rather than lie there thinking about it, get up and either read a book, watch some tv or tidy a kitchen cupboard (works every time!!) then when you feel tired go back to bed.

You could also try (you can tell, I've tried many things for insomnia!) having a relaxing bath with candles and lavender bubble bath just before you go to bed. This can relax you and make you sleepy. I do this most nights now.

As for going back to work, if you feel up to it, it might do you good. The smell of food at 10 weeks would have sent me rushing to the bathroom!

I hope you feel better whatever you decide to do!

Hi Helen,

To be honest the first few months of pregnancy I was ok I was able to sleep and that ment DH was getting a good nights sleep as well.

But from about 20wks I have found sleeping a nightmare, DH is a milkman so he doesn't get much sleep in the night as it is, but now I know I will be up every hour having a wee and it just does my head in. I wake up and before I look at the clock I say the time in my head and I am always right giving 10 minutes either way.

Maybe it would be worth buying one of those pillows Nik advised, but to be honest I tried it and couldn't comfortable at all.

Its not for getting up for a wee, its cramp in my legs etc......

Hi Helen

I too have been having a bit of trouble sleeping. I am not working at the mo either and my DH says it's because I am not doing anything constructive during the day. I think watching Neighbours is quite constructive!! I did want to go back to work but as I have had two threatened miscarriges I didn't want to tempt fate. I have found that going for a nice walk in the afternoon with fresh air has helped a bit. I need to borrow a dog I think!! Get a puzzle book and try doing them at 3am it sends me back off. The annoying thing about not being able to sleep is listening to someone next to you in a lovely deep sleep and just as you are about to drop off they start to snore - aaaaaaarggg!!!

You may want to go back part time but like Nikola said the smell of food for her and for me when I was 10 weeks was terrible. I was so so sick for ages.

I am looking forward to Big Brother starting again as they are usually up and very drunk most of the night and it gives you something to watch in the wee hours. Talking of wee - must dash!

Good luck love Dagny x

Hi Dagny,

Do you just love it when your just nodding off and your other half starts to snore, I could get the pillow and put it over his head  that is just one thing that really annoys me but never mind, it won't be the snorning for much longer it will be the bottle feeding and changing poo nappies :) :)

DAgny

you do make me laugh. ! If you want to walk a dog, I have two that would love you to walk them!! Arthur managed to get himself lost yesterday, which meant instead of my normal 2 miles, I ended up walking up and down hills for about 5 miles!!! I was knackered! So was he bless, when he found me.

I do think the walking is doing me good. I'm determined to keep doing it as long as possible before I find a dog walker to take over for a while. I usually go about lunchtime for an hour or an hour and half (or yesterday two and half hours!!!!) and the fresh air is great. Even now, when its raining and cold, once you get out there you feel much better! Not sure how I'll cope with two delinquent dogs and two babies........I will somehow!

As for snoring!!! Shell I do exactly what you say you wish you could do - I cover his head in a pillow, or I try to roll him over, or close his mouth and if none of that works, I slap him round the chops! That always works!!!

Hi Nikola,

Yeah slap him round the chops go girl go girl, well Lee done well last night he didn't snore. Mind I had a terrible nights sleep, I was awake most of it I just felt very uncomfortable. I got up at 07:45 for a wee and then I thought I will go back to bed and then I finally woke up at 09:45. This is the thing when It's time to get up I don't want to, but can't stay in bed all night.

Hi Shell and Nik

I could put a pillow over his head - Good thinking. I usually push my knees into his back or pinch his nose! I know what you mean Shell, about the snoring being our last problem when there is a baby screaming and pooing and needing food, Nik yours will be in stereo!!!!!  I am really quite nervous about the nights. At least mine will be a summer baby and the nights aren't as long. Roll on Big Brother!

I could borrow my parents dogs to walk but they live in Devon and they are total fair weather dogs. They are both Weimarana's and as soppy as you like and so very spoilt. My parents fuss over them much more than they did me and my brother! What breed are your dogs, Nikola? I love their names.

Take care everyone

Hi Helen,

I didn't have any trouble sleeping through the night until later on in the pregnancy (probably your body getting you used to sleepless nights!). I find getting up and watching telly downstairs helps me nod off eventually (I normally end up watching Coronation Street that I have taped, or Countdown at 4 am ish). I find that I can usually go back to bed and sleep for a while. I also find that a mug of hot chocolate before bed helps.
Don't worry too much about not being able to sleep - I don't think that it will harm the baby. At least whilst you're off work you can sleep during the day. I'm sure it will get easier,

Hi
Thanks for the replies. We got a new mattress and pillows a couple of months ago so i know its not that (i had some of the best nights sleep until now). However i think i might invest in one of those pillows Nikola suggested.
I know what you mean about snoring i just nugde mine and if that doesn,t work i hold his nose.
I have also put the dam alarm on his side of the bed as he ignores it in the morning and i have to hit the snooze button (at least 3 times).
I find i have to go to the loo more often as well at night and as i am still using my pessaries i try not to go for at least an hour after. I also found out last night that if i lie on my right side it makes me feel as if i need a pee.
I do have a dog but he lives with my mum and sis. I could go a walk with my sis but she walks for miles. i Know this may sound daft but i am really to scared to do anything, but i want to. I do the housework. The one thing i do plan to do later on is aquanetal, my so called friend did it and really enjoyed it.

We discussed about going back to work last night and he said that if i am worring about it now then i will be twice as bad when i am there so we decided its a bad idea.
I have already lost two babies and its not worth losing another.

Hi all,

Helen - hope things are improving sllep wise. I'm 31 weeks now and slleping is a nightmare. I've tried that maternity pillow that's like a long sausage beanbag - to no avail, and just bought yesterday one of those wedge cheese shaped pillows to prop under your bump which I have to admit has helped a little last night...

I did my first aquanatal class today and it was great - 'loosing' your weight for a bit was lovely, although finding a cozzie was a nightmare...

I love it at night when you hear everything. I'm even finding myself saying to dh 'breathe more quietly'!!!! :D

hi everyone

Sounds like you are all a lot kinder than me re the snoring! A gentle pinch of the nose or a kick doesn't work! It needs to be a good slap under the chin to shut his mouth up!!!

Helen- I think if you have doubts about going back and you don't need to yet, don't bother. Wait till you are ready (if at all!) I must say I've found a gentle stroll with Arthur and Jeremy is a good way to get some fresh air and gentle exercise. I do a lot less stick throwing (much to Arthur's annoyance), because i can't bend down and back up as easily!!

Dagny - you can borrow arthur/Jeremy anytime. Arthur is a 4 year old liver/white springer spaniel and Jeremy is a black/white pointer/collie/lab cross - he came from the rescue centre so we are not entirely sure!!! I'm starting to look for a dog walker for when I can't walk them anymore but they are my babies and I don't trust just anyone to come and take them out! They need references!!!! I'm probably worse than your parents....
