Iron supplements

Post by kerpupples »

My pediatrician recommended an iron/D multivitamin for Morgan at 2 months since I'm still breastfeeding exclusively. I bought Poly-Vi-Sil and tried to give it to her. She hates it and it stains her clothing! So I started Googling and most sources say she gets the iron she needs from breastmilk. At the very least I need to switch to something she'll swallow. I don't blame her for spitting it out, I tasted it and it's truly disgusting.

What have you ladies done? What about vitamin D? Supplement or sunlight?

Abby was taking Polyvisol forever and I always just mixed it in with her bottle. That's also how the nurses gave it to her in the NICU and she took it with no problem that way. Good luck!

Thanks corny. Morgan didn't get anything like that in the NICU. We can try giving it to her in the bottles of my expressed milk and see how that goes.

hey kerpupples - congrats on the birth of Morgan!
when we were only b/feeding, I was told to give Pulman TRI-Vi-SOL and he actually loved that- it's way harder to find than the poly, but it didn't stain like the poly and tasted pretty good-
also- Morgan should be getting vitamin D from the sun-

take care

Hi there. i am also still exclusively breasfeeding my 19 week old DD. In the UK the BMA had said that babies still being breastfed at 6 months required additional iron as the baby's natural stores become depleted.
The most recent announcement is that even though breast milk has less iron than formula - in actual fact it is easier to absorb so the baby doesnt need any supplements.

The usual I guess...more conflicting information!

What age does the US recommend weaning. In the UK we are told to wait to 26 weeks!
