New to IVF & worried

Post by LisaB »

I have just discovered this website, and thank goodness for some of the information it provides. After 7 years of trying, my doctor has suggested IVF, which I start next month. Can anyone give me a little more insight on it. My biggest fear is needles and I never thought there would be so many needles involved. I guess I'm just looking for some positive feedback to ease my mind and help me deal with the fear.

Hi lisa

you will get a lot of support and question answered from this board
and im sure alot of people on here will tell you that the needles injections really are not as bad as you think they will be.
though im not as good as loopy could not do them myself had to get dP to do them for me i have just done my second IVF/ICSI and got a positive result and on the 2nd 2 weeek wait i find the waiting game the worse thing of all this and i was not keen on needles at all at the beginning but got used to them.

best wishes and loads of luck for when you start your treatment

Hi...so glad you found the board. Most of us get a great deal of support and comfort on here!

Never been overly scared of needles but hardly loved them either. The auto-injector pen is a piece of cake though, it seriously doesn't hurt a bit - provided you've at least a little roll of flesh to inject into. Besides, the whole process is one long stirrup fest which after a while seems less and less intrustive. Worries about false-tan, socks vs. bare feet and painted nails all seem a worthwhile distraction vs. lying half naked in a room full of people :D

My first ivf was successful and my daughter is now 11m. It was all SOOOOO worth it. We've had two fails since and called it a day but the 'pregnant after treatment' board is full of very happy ladies about to give birth! It does work!

good luck
love Debra.

Hi Lisa

Welcome to the site. You have found a fantastic board full of us girls helping and supporting eachother through the most emotional time of our lives. No question will go un-answered and nothing is deemed too silly either. Like Debra just said we have a laugh on here too debating whether we should wear socks during scans or go bare foot :D and chatting about daft things we come out with during EC whilst sky high on drugs and sedatives. Dh's usually can't wait to tell what we have said after EC. It's the highlight of their day

If you are scared of needles now you probably wont be soon. I wasn't that preterbed about injecting and I actually chose not to use the auto injector pen as it makes me bruise too much so I just jab and go. No problem. The needles are so small too I don't feel a thing but I do appreciate we are all different and have phobias about things like needles.

I find putting the pessaries in my fairy  the worst bit about the process, more so if they have to go into the back door if you get my drift? Usually the 2 days between EC and ET. YUK

Good luck Lisa and keep in touch.

Love Dagny xkx

Hi Lisa
Really really dont spend a minute being scared about the injections. I do them myself - in my tummy - just pinch a "roll" and put the needle in- you feel the pinch and not the needle -I promise. If you have EVER had anything waxed thats like 100 times more painful!!

I have found the whoel process (on ICSI number 2) , physically , pretty easy - and have up until now carried on completely normally (except for cutting out the vino almost completely - VERY VERY dull!!)
Mentally its a bit more of a struggle - but to be honest probably no worse than what you have already been thru if you have been trying to conceive for a few years...which can be pretty depressing at times! Especially when friends get PG - thats what hurts me!

I would just warn you to keep your expectations realistic - I'm not trying to be -ve, but IF you dont get pregnant , after ALL the treatment, it does hit quite hard (I was pretty shocked by how long it took me to stop being tearful after my first ICSI failed). Just be ready for it and make sure you have DH/ friend/ Family/ us around at all times!!

Good luck, really hope it all works out for you! What treatment are you having - when do you start?
