What a long day yesterday

Post by Helen Reid »

Hi all

I had a horrible day yesterday it all started with a routine appt with my gp at 12.10. He asked how i was and i was fine, he asked if baby was fine and if there was plenty of movement and i just said well no, not really i had not felt him move since the day before in the afternoon and he has not been as active for a few days but that i thought it was because i have not been relaxing as much and that is when i feel him move more and at night. So he said pop up on the couch and we will have a listen. Well he could not find a heartbeat but he thought he felt a couple of kicks but i could not feel them. But he was not sure how he was lying so he went to see if the midwife was about but come back with another doctor. She had a good feel to see how he was lying and his back was facing my front and she found the heartbeat and even though i only had heard it on tuesday it was such a relief. But because i had not felt any movement i was to have 10 good strong movements before tea time or i was to phone the midwife.
Well i got to the car and just burst into tears. I phoned my dh trying not to cry as not to worry him as it is all he seems to do worry about me. But he knew there was something wrong but he was +ve and started talking about the nursery etc. So i went to my mums and upset her to she took one look at me and i thought she was going to burst into tears as well. We sat all day watching tv trying not think about it and at 1.45 i got my first strong kick right in the ribs and another half an hour later. By 3.45 i had not felt another movement so i phoned the midwife and left a message. My dh phoned to say he was on his way home (he had come back closer to home to work after i had phoned him), so i went home and waited for the midwife to phone me back.By 6 she still had not phoned but i had been having a lot more movement by then and it seemed he had woken up from a long sleep (i blame the aquanatal as it had rocked him into the long sleep the night before). He was active the rest of the night and i was so relieved.
My midwife phoned this morning first thing she had got my message, they were short staffed and she had to go to another clinic all day yesterday. She asked if everything was fine and i told her yes she was very appoligetic but i told her if i had not felt him move i would of had phoned the hospital. I have just to keep an eye on the movements and if i am at all worried to phone her or the hospital.
It was one of the longest days i have had for a long time the worry just never seems to end. I am so glad i have the love and support of my dh and my mum and sis. My dh just needs to be around and everything seems better.
Going to pick up the cradle from my friends today so that will cheer me up some more.

A lot calmer

Oh my goodness

What a day you have had. I held my breath through reading your post and I am so relieved it is OK. You must have been so worried when the doctor had to get the nurse.

Thank goodness all is fine. I can imagine that you will be prodding the baby all the time now to get it to move. Perhaps it's a lazy devil and will be a sleepy thing once it's been born.

It's great that you have so much support from your DH and family.

Take care

Oh my goodness how dreadful - poor you - mine aren't very active sometiems at all - don't feel them all day - especially when I have been active like you say. My opionion is that there is not much room so they are tending to shuffle around like boulders in night. One is lying back to me so don't get the kicks at all or at least don't feel them the same.

I am sorry to say this but many GP's are pretty useless at this sort of thing and start panic when unnecessary - mine stays welll clear unless he has to of maternity and babies (unborn!) - The midwife's are much better and don't want him sticking his oar in. Must say have not asked what normal movement is as all different and don;t want to get in a flap.

Glad all ok and happy cradle picking up.
Love

What a nightmare! Glad that everything is ok now. I get concerned sometimes as the movements i get are very erractic and seem to be all one sided, even though there is a baby on each side. Sometimes i don't feel anything for ages, but another time he is fairly busy. I think the busier we are the less we actually notice the movements, even though they are probably still as active as when we are relaxed.
take care, helen :D

hihi helen, sorry to hear of the distress u must have beening going
thru, its strange we all cant wait till we feel that first move and
think its so reasuring, then the little one decides he wants to have a long
sleep and we start worrying, it never stops.
i think we all sound similar in fact when i have been active,
after i have played a round of golf i feel nothing, and i start to panic
but when im home later in the evening with my feet up junior
makes his presence felt. Take care alisonn

Hi Helen,
How awful for you, I can imagine you were so scared, thank God the baby was ok! I myself am totally confused about movements, only started feeling them with some certainty for the last week or so and the girls had to reassure me that it's not too late (I also saw them on the scan, but we are always looking for confirmation, arent't we!). Seems they have long peaceful periods and then they get kicking, i cannot make anything out of it. I guess sometimes it's better not to know too much! wonder how your doctor ame up with these 10 strong movements as a criterion...seems ab it arbitrary...
love,
juliana

Hi

Thanks for all your messages. He is moving well again and dh felt him move for the first time on Saturday night when i was sleeping. He says he likes to have a hand on my belly when i am asleep. I also felt him kick yesterday and it is wonderful, i can also see my tops move sometimes. Everytime i go to the toilet at night i feel him move and it is getting really difficult to get comfy now.
I have read somewhere that after so many weeks the midwife gives you a kick chart and you have to have so many movements in a certain time but can not remember where i read it, but it is more for your own piece of mind than anything else. My sis told her work about it and one of the nurses daughters pg and she has one but she is further on than me.

At this stage they do have patterns of sleep and awake i read that somewhere to. My midwife has said that it is still early days i think by that, that she meant not to worry as they do have quite days and still have a lot of room to move about and it depends on the way they are lying.
I feel most of the movement at the top of my belly as if he is stuck in my ribs.

Hope you all had a good weekend. I got some more of a tan, just in time for family photos on Wednesday.

Hi Helen,

I'm glad you are sounding better. If it helps at all, I felt Sam less as time went on. I think it also depends on how the baby is positioned - if the legs are facing inwards, you will feel less. At my 21 week scan, I felt nothing despite seeing him move for 45 minutes on the screen. I was told that as long as you get 10 movements (rolls, kicks, flutters) in 24hrs, you are fine. As time passes it's less like kicks for a lot anyway as the baby has less room to move and it is more like rolls and ripples on the skin.

Like your husband, mine said he never went to sleep until he felt him and Sam always seemed to be active when I was asleep and couldn't feel him. Of course, I thought he was just lazy and never moved!!

Anyway, take care. Time will soon pass!!
