Thyroid Level- Please Advise

Post by Sunshine1576 »

I received a phone call this morning that my thyroid is considered high at 3.5 for my clinic and I'm now three days away till beta. Shouldn't this of been something done at baseline? Why would they be calling me now, because it only makes me concerned. I need to be stress-free as possible, but has anyone else had a high level but still had success?

Hi Sunshine, I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I wanted to provide you with some reassurance. My thyroid wasn't tested until after my first beta. My thyroid level was 4.26 at that time. I've been on medication (generic of Synthroid) prescribed by my RE since that result. I am now 18 weeks pregnant. Did your clinic mention medication? My level is down to .86 now. After being released from my clinic, my family doctor monitors my level every month with bloodwork but they and my OB have said I will most likely be on the medication my entire pregnancy, which is fine by me. Good luck!!!

Thank you for responding Fruit, maybe this is our final diagnosis it was my thyroid the whole time, too bad it couldn't of been detected sooner. Oh well I cannot dwell on something I have no control over (right now) and must try to accept it for what it is...There will be another chance.

Awww thanks blueeyedreamer, I remember cycling with you, how are you doing these days? :D My nurse thinks it's a possibility I could still be pregnant, but if I am not they want it monitored and get it down somewhere around 2.5 before anymore fertility treatment. But if I could be pg, I would still want it monitored anyway, so I don't think the extra b/w vial should be tossed away. Do you think the high dosage of follistim could influence the number being so high? I am cautiously excited about Friday, but regardness we will be monitoring my crazy hormones a little better. Maybe this explains why I struggle to gain weight?

Hello Sunshine-

I too had an elevated thyroid level before my second pregnancy and fresh transfer. I was put on 50mcg of Synthroid, which really seems to help out with my energy level. I am still on the same dose even though my daughter is now 8 months old. I think the stress of my previous pregnancy with my daughter Ashley, who passed away as a stillborn baby, on my thyroid is what really put me over the edge because they tested right before I was pregnant and it was fine.

But, I am a pharmaceutical rep and registered nurse and I had the pleasure of speaking with a representative of the company who manufacturers Synthroid on a business trip to Las Vegas and she informed me that there are studies out there that have linked difficulty in getting pregnant or maintaining a pregnancy with patients with high TSH levels, which might have contributed to loss of my daughter. So my point is that it is very important that you get your levels within a normal range if not before you are pregnant or definitely during your pregnancy and make sure they monitor your levels throughout the pregnancy also.

I wish you all of the luck in the world!

Thank you Angela for your advice on getting everything in line. Never knew how the thyroid plays such an important role until this week after trying to get pregnant again for so long. We lost our first pg in Spring 2010 at around 7 weeks but it was a natural pg and my only one. Since then we tried for 6 months again with no such luck and then finally my husband was courgeous enough to walk in the clinic and talked with an RE one day while I was at work. We collatorated with our first clinic for nearly a year, bloodwork was done during my baseline and when I did an IVF with them, nothing was said about anything possibly being wrong because I ovulated and had a regular 28 day cycle, but I always questioned my inability to gain weight and they would tell me not to be concerned. After the first failed IVF, they tried to talk me into another one, I decided I wanted laproscopic surgery in April to check out everything only to find out everything was "textbook perfect". So we tried 2 iuis with them and they were unsuccessful. One thing I noticed was she would often tell me bloodwork would not be neccessary since they would struggle to find a vein. I was thinking how do you monitor hormone levels without bloodwork? They did everything with ultrasounds and once the follicles were almost there she would have me do opks at home to detect ovulation. So anyway, during our last iui she told me to be thinking about our next move...That I shouldn't keep on trying something that is not working. So I did and went with my obgyn's recommnedation who told me about a fertility clinic based in Mobile, AL who has a proven success rate. They also offer the IVF Attain program with financing options which we might look into later on, but first we want to look at the "fixable things" if we can. So now I'm traveling the distance to whatever it takes...With so much faith I know it's going to happen in at the right time. Sorry this post turned into a novel, but I wanted to tell you thank you for responding and letting me know I have someone out there who has been through this already. Your valued advice gives me so much hope and encouragement. :D Christy
