Any research on why some tmts fail?

Post by DebraP »

Hello, at the risk of sounding like a complete bimbette....does anyone know why tmts fail after ET? I can understand if there is a follie or fertilisation issue, or getting them to divide but once they are in, what happens then?

I've had 1 success, 1 positive then m/c and 1 fail. Why, if it worked once for me, should the 2nd 2 not?? Same DF, same clinic, same me. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something obvious. I'm not interested in my situation but wondered if anyone knew? My guess is it must be implantation issues - but what???

Just curious and hoping someone has a clue!
Debra.

Hiya Debra :D

When I spoke with my consultant about my failed ICSI, I was under the impression there was no rhyme or reason why it failed, it just did! However, he stated that the most likley cause is abnormalities in the embryos, which also occurs in natural conception. However, with natural conception you never knew anything about the fertilised egg in the uterus as AF arrives almost on time. It's the fact that with IVF you know you have 2 embryos inside and therefore become aware! He states that over 40% of pregnancies end before people normally even know about them because of some sort of abnormality.

Hope this helps and there are probably other reasons but this is what I was told.

The six million dollar question hey? If they knew the answer.......... wow can you imagine the success rate.
Nickie summed it all up - they believe this happens exactly the same way in natural conception - ie look at the success rate there - a healthy couple in their 20's trying each month will have a 20% success rate - less than IVF - it is probably they have an embryo or embies that start implanting then stop but never know as they were not party to the fact they had embies in there in the first place like us. Mostly they would not have gone on to develop properly as have congenital probs with them. The fact that you have had successful tmt means you stand a better chance as your body knows and has proved what to do. Even if you weren't having IVF it is no guarantee you just go out and get pg first time again -does this make sense?

Hi Debra

I have wondered the very same thing so it's not just you being a bimbette. I couldn't understand why it works sometimes but not other times but after reading Nickie and Tracey's replies it kind of maks sense now. Thanks Nickie and Tracey.

We are both in the same boat as we have both had babies so there should be no reason for it not to work but it's all down to fate I suppose and we have to keep the faith.

Figers crossed and *babydust* for us both.

Probably not the sperm but is harder to say in your case as you have had 3 different eggs and therefore hard to see the pattern if this makes sense. You are still not doing any worse than people trying naturally in terms of numbers so most likely to be nothing at all except to you it is everything as it is to all of us on IVF and tmt! I have no reason to believe it won't happen for you and would be suprised if the clinic said any different.
Big hugs to you all
