New to all this

Post by julesg »

Hi,

I have been reading this site for a while as it is a fantastic source of information.

We are about to start our very first cycle of ICSI :? Just been waiting for AF which came today so I will be starting the sniffing on day23 not sure the exact protocol I will be on - if anyone has any tips/hints as to what to expect and how long each part takes I would be very grateful.

The hardest thing I have found so far is waiting!! I am soo not good at waiting - still who is.

Good luck to everyone

Hi Julie!

Welcome to the site! It has helped me lots!
Time scales can vary, my first ivf cycle was 8 weeks from down reg to test date, this time it's 6 weeks. I think it's usually between 6-7 weeks for a long protocol from start to test.
Now, hints + tips! :D Yes, the waiting is definately the hardest part! So what I have learnt from my 1st cycle is to try and keep busy while cycling (without over-doing it..) as I took the whole 2 months off the 1st time, expecting to feel rotten, then felt ok and time really dragged!
Also, something that really helped me was having a really good protein diet when you are on the stimulation stage as this can help with egg quality. I really believe this worked for me as I was a slow responder, then I managed to get 9 really good eggs! If you want any more info on this, just let me know!

Hope this helps a bit! Good Luck!

HI there
Welcome - I have done ICSI twice. First time unsuccessful and 2nd time - AMAZINGLY - I got pregnant! Miracles DO happen

All protocols are different - but I had one injection to down reg me - I think that was like day 21 of my AF, then waited till about day 5 of next cycle and start daily stimulating injections for about 2 weeks - they should monitor you pretty closely through out this -to see how your ovaries are doing . Physically I found it very easy really - the injections are tiny and much easier than you'd think. I did them myself into my tummy - it helps if you pinch a bit of fat and inject into that!!
You might get a bit of swollen tummy - but noone else would notice
At the end of that they'll collect you eggs and inject with your partners spem - the fertilisation rate is excellent with ICSI.
The problem comes when the put the embies back in - thats when (and noone really knows why it seems) alot dont make it. Everything else being equal I think you have about a 25% chance of getting pregnant.

After the embies have been put back in (About 2/3 days after you eggs have been collected) - you have to wait 2 weeks to do a pregnancy test -thats the really hard bit!! All you can do is put your feet up and wait!
Just try to be realistic - you go NUTS watching out for all the various pregnancy of period symtoms in the 2 weeks- but they all mean nothing!

WE were told we had no chance basically. My DH pretty much has NO sperm , but in the end it does seemed to have worked (touch wood!) - so if your DH has at least got a few sperms in there -then you should be lucky!!

TAke care - dont hesittae to ask any questions
