HI all,
Annie is 14 weeks now, and I am taking ehr to baby clinic fortnightly. I like the reassurance and advice..Am keen to know how long people go to clinic??, do you stop taking them at six months??, twelve months??
And is it just me , or are some of the child health nurses about as reassuring as a house brick??
Belinda
Hi Bel. I never found the clinic esp. reassuring so only ever went for our injection apts. or the scheduled special checks ie. at 12m. They do have a drop-in afternoon which I went to once as she had a rash, but they sent me away to the doctors who I like to avoid. I'm lucky that Maya has only ever needed to go to the doctor's twice.
She had shots at 15m, had a physio apt. at 18m and hasn't been since. I think she'll go at 24m for a general check.
I've never been too keen on the clinic as they were aghast at our vegetarianism (all but unheard of here) and I got fed up defending our very healthy diet to them.
If you find the clinic reassuring, why stop?
Debra.
I'm with Debra on that one - don't stop until you feel ready to. That's what they are they for and you'll know soon enough when you're ready to 'let go'!
We are all different the only time I take Alex is for his weigh ins and checks ie injections but he ain't due now for a bit for his MMR jabs. If you feel it helps with the little one then why stop, there is no reason why you should stop do it when you feel up to it.
HI gals,
You've hit the nail on the head Debra, I have felt like I have to defend myself all the time, and that I've had my knuckles rapped as though I'm a naughty school child on a number of accassions as well, which was just pathetic really. I've changed clinics as at yesterday, and seem to have got lucky with a fabulous child health nurse. She seems really sensible and open and non-judgemental, so I'll keep going to her fortnightly while I find it reassuring!

Bel...well done you for finding a new clinic with friendlier nurses so quickly. They'll have seen every kind of mother under the sun so will be sympathetic I'm sure to a first time mummy with lots of questions.
BTW. I've not got a thermometer! I use the 'mouthtest', ie. I place my lips on her forehead and that tells me if she's too warm. It doesn't tell me how warm of course so perhaps we'll get one of the ear-thermometers, I suspect she'd bite anything in her mouth and we'd get kicked if we tried the other end!!!
Hi Debra,
I like the mouth test as well!, I read somewhere that this is incredibly accurate for mum's (less so for dads interestingly!), and highly correlated to actual temperature..I think part of motherhood is about learning to trust yourself and your instincts. I'm such a scientific person I really struggle with this, I look for hard facts and data, and lets face it, often there's no evidence based practice for parenting!!..I do like the ear thermometers though, they're quick and accurate, and not readily chewed!!
Take care Debra
Hugs to Maya
