Polycystic and First ICSI drug level's given

Hello,

Myself and my wife have just had our first ICSI treatment although it was aborted on Friday. My wife has polycystic ovaries and the hospital started her injections as 2 powders to 1 water. The follicles didnt grow as much as they should (only reached half of their size) so no egg collection on this cycle. They have said on the next treatment they would use 3 or 4 powders to 1 water (4 is the max apparently).

I guess my question is has this happened to anyone else before and did they grow again to the correct size when they started their next treatment to maybe put our minds at rest a little bit.

Sorry to hear about your cancelled cycle but hopefully next time will be ok.
I have polycystic ovaries and had ICSI. I started on 1 water to 1 tablet as i was only 25 and having PCO means you have a high risk of hyperstimulation, so they start you on a low dose. I didn't respond to the drugs, but had scans and blood tests daily and the dose was increased daily until i got to 4 tablets a day. At that point my body responded and the cycle carried on to be succesful.
I'm in the middle of my 2nd ICSI cycle now and i've been told that in people with PCO it is really difficult to predict how the woman will react to the drugs, but as i didnt respond quick last time, then this time i'll start on 3 tablets and hopefully get a better result with more eggs collected.

I too have polycystic ovaries. Although, I haven't had the same thing happen to me as your wife I know a little bit about PCOS. Susie is right that for people with PCOS, there is an increased risk of hyperstimulation, which is potentially quite dangerous. The risk of hyperstimulation is also higher the younger you are (I don't know how old your wife is). Therefore, doctors are usually fairly cautious with the drugs first time round. From a health perspective, it's better to understimulate than overstimulate. I realise that this must be frustrating and disappointing, but I'm sure next time round they'll have a better idea. Everyone is different and what drugs and dosage work for some might not work for others. There's a lot of trial and error with this fertility treatment lark.

Hi R - Now your hospital has a better idea of your wife's reaction, your tmt can be better tailored next cycle. It's much better to be over cautious (although frustrating), than risk OHSS.
