Bad back ache

Post by Susie »

Hi, I'm 5 weeks pg and on and off for a week have been getting backache in the lower part of my back. Its similar to period pain, but not as severe. I phoned my clinic and all they said is rest, but with a 4 yr old and a part time job its not easy.
Has anyone else had this? I think I had it last time but not sure it was as bad.
Can anyone help please?

hi Susie

I have had lower back pain for most of my adult life, and had it under control the last 2 years with fantastic natural therapy here in Germany, so when it flared up really bad during 2ww I have just put it down to being more uptight but it really worried me. I have no idea if your aches have to do with being pg?? if not you my like to try this:

I went to my accupressurist (no needles, they push on pain points and deep tissue massage ) and after 2 sessions it has gone much "duller" and is OK. Obviously she is being very gentle with me as I am pg. I can only suggest that you keep it moving as letting it lock up will make it worse. Zita has some good stretches in her book. RElaxation exercises will also help.

hope that helps

chronic back pain

Post by Wendy »

Hi, I sympathise with you on the back pain. With my first baby I was in such pain I could not walk - I saw a great dr who basically said it was bad luck, its just one of those things and due to the progesterone weakening the ligaments particularly in and around the pelvic area giving you the pain which in turn makes you walk oddly giving you more pain. (but obviously doesn't affect everyone so badly) He showed me some excercises which basically straighten your pelvic area back into shape - I was up and about the next day. The pain continued throughout my pregnancy but due to the excercises never got as bad as it had before. I think the progesterone pessaries I was still told to take by the clinic also made it worse. I'm now 5mths into my second ivf pregnancy and again am suffering with the back pain, particularly after lying or sitting for any length of time - i can hardly move when I try to get up in the night to go to the loo, i stagger to the bathroom.
The excercises are pretty simple but you'll need hubby to help:
1, lie on your back and get hubbs to gently lift your leg, bending it at the knee, up to your chest and gently push. take it back down then repeat twice more then repeat with the other leg.
2, same again but instead of pushing the knee down to your chest he should push it over your pelvis to the side as it were - again do it 3 x with each leg.
3, lying down still, with one of his hands on your pelvic bone (front of the body) and the other at the back on the other side - push and pull at the same time then swap sides

Not 100 % clear i'm sure - just ask if you don't understand and i'll try to explain better. But it works for me - doesn't get rid of the pain but stops it getting so bad I can't walk at all. On a good note it completely dissapeared after baby arrived.

good luck love wendy xxx
