I have been reading everything i can in order to try and prepare myself. The hospital told me that i may be able to have a general anasthetic but i want to prepare myself just in case.
Oh...and good luck to all you girls. It's great knowing that there are other women out there with the same worries as me. http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/d/ ... 01/ttc.png

I just had this done a week ago Monday and I didn't have a problem. I did however get sick from the anasthetic but that is normal for me. The procedure itself was fairly painless but I did feel uncomfortable for about a week afterwards. It felt like someone punched me in the stomach. I was able to work without a problem it was just a little uncomfortable bending over or lifting something up.
My transfer was on Saturday and I was suprised at how painless that was.
Good luck with everything and don't worry you will be fine.
Hi, I just wanted to say that I opted for the general an. as I hyper-stimulated quite a bit. I had over 45 follicles, and thought that I would be crazy to attempt a collection being awake!!!
I think that it depends on how many follicles you have, and what you feel able to take on. I was a bit sore for a few days, as I was a bit swollen, but if you don't have loads of follicles, then if you feel that you want to be awake, then that would be up to you.... I personally don't think that I could have been awake for my collection.
Got a bit uncomfortable as i got close to retrieval it felt like my belly was full of water balloons!
The ER was fine and I had sedation. i don't remember any of it.
Was quite uncomfortable for a couple of days after but I would not say it was painful, standing up for long periods of time was difficult but so was sitting down. This worried me as my books said it did not hurt but was told by nurse that this was normal.

I found it painful and was surpirsed as the doctors only referred to 'discomfort'. I was still in pain for the ET 3 days later. It wasn't unbearable, but I definitley had pain rather than discomfort. They did give me some painkillers to take. I had to walk very carefully for several days afterwards. The other ladies who did EC and ET with me all seemd fine though - I think it varies quite a lot.
good luck.

sorry to say that but EC was really painful for me. Not during the collection as I was under General, But when I woke up... I couldnt walk for a whole week...

My wife's ER went very smoothly but 2 days later she developed excruciating pain in her lower abdomen. I got the doctor on the phone and he called us in for a checkup.
The doctor examined and ruled out an infection and mentioned that this maybe due to the number of punctured follicles (18 in all) and possibly there is some blood in the ovaries. The pain did go away in the next 2 days.
I have been told, that if there is an infection, then the person will be ashen faced and will kinda jump when touched around the lower abdomen.
My wife's abdomen has also been heavily distended.
Its been 3 days since the Embryo transfer ...so we are in the waiting mode...will be tested on Nov 10th.
Ah....thanks for all the replies and great advice. i think i'm going to opt for a general anasthetic as i can't stand pain. Sad but true. Thankfully this is a bit of a way off at the moment as i am due for my second TVS on wednesday as i don't seem to have responded to the Busrellin?? They are going to wait and see what happens after a week, so i am praying that everything will be ok. My enjoyment of Xmas is riding on this.
It is so hard.
Thankfully, i went to work today and discovered a male collegue of mine's wife is having IVF too. That was nice as he spoke about the same angst that my husband is currently experiencing. It was nice to hear a male experience and i also really appreciated that he shared it with me. We all know how hard it is to find people we trust to release our angst to.
I am sooooo glad i registered on this site. xx

Hi good to see you over here on the general forum. I am so glad I registered too. it can get very lonely out here. I went for a scan today to see if I had ovulated in prep for my prostap jab. Sniffing doesn't work for me to down reg. This is my second jab as tmt couldn't continue last time due to cysts appearing. It's an ongoing saga. Anyway I still have a cyst so I will have to have it drained before I can start stimming. On and On and On and On..... feel that I will never get to ER to see if my eggs are OK. We have unexplained infertility. Both of us are A OK according to all our tests etc.
Time does drag, every appointment seems to end with another obstacle. But we must stay positive! Sharing our stories gives us more info and then we ask the right questions to those professionals who can hold our future in their hands.
Sorry I seem to have gone on a bit there!! Hopefully that's because I'm pre-menstrual. Come on AF show your face!!
Hi Anna
I hope you're ok. Thanks for the encouragement. I think they are going to tell me on wednesday that i'm gonna have to have my cyst drained too. I do feel like my period's coming though and i sooo hope it does. It never comes when you want it to. I'm thinking that if it does then that will be a good thing as it will thin my lining. when i went for my scan on wednesday, they asked me whether i had been taking the drugs as my lining was so thick. i couldn't believe it. Just my luck! My husband was gutted but held it together for my sake. I had to check that he was ok though. it is so esy to become self absorbed.
I have had a miscarriage and a ruptured ectopic, so as a result i've only got the one tube. i had Pelvic Inflammatory disease in my teens. they told me to start trying for a baby then..but to be honest i was in no frame of mind to start a family in my 20's. i almost wish i had now.
I am going to pray for my period. At the back of my mind, i am already preparing myself for bad news. It's the only way i can cope with it all right now. I hope you get yours too.
Best of luck and i look forward to hearing some good news from you soon. You have given me hope.
Have a lovely weekend!! x
Hi,
I've had 3 ECs and the clinic I attend always gives general anaesthetic, and I've never had any symptoms at all afterwards. I've read some of the message postings and realised that either other clinics aren't as careful, or else I'm just very lucky. None of the other people I know have ever had any problems with egg collection, either, and I'm wondering whether there are surgeons who are better at it, more careful, more experienced than others or whether it's just down to the patient's invidual internal makeup. If I had the choice, I would always have a general, because it's short-acting and by the following day the effects have worn off, but you've avoided having pain during the procedure and the surgeon's more relaxed because under sedation the patient can sometimes move around, be in pain, talk etc which makes them tense and can't be good for surgical procedures. I'm worried because I'm probably going to have GIFT next, rather than IVF, which means I'll have to have EC under sedation rather than anaesthetic, as I will then have the laparoscopy which of course requires a general and I can't have two in one day.
I think a lot of the bloated, painful stomachs are the cysts which are normal and which help to support the pregnancy as they are full of progesterone. When I was 3 months pregnant I looked about 6 months pregnant because I had 12 enormous cycsts on my ovaries, which gradually go down by about the fourth month, leaking hormones into the uterus.
