Lyly, why did they do the second set of tests? If the first one was in a normal range?
I know the genetic counselor will be pushing amnio .It's still up to you.Maybe it's better to do it and get it over with,at least you'll know for sure instead driving yourself crazy for the rest of your pregnancy. We decided not to do any testing, except one at 20 weeks and I try not to think about it. My husband truly believes it's all about money they can get from you for all this testing ,get you paranoid and get more money from amnio tests.
But in your situation damage is done already to your mind and I don't think you can just forget and stop thinking about it. Hon,I don't know what to tell you,I didn't want to be in this situation ,that's why I refused all testing in the beginning(well, they didn't even push for the first blood screen because I started out with triplets ant test is not informative, they wanted me to got straight to amnio). I know, you probably woun't just leave it alone ,then you should do what feels right for you.

Jamie- The doc told me that my age alone puts me at 1/200 the fact that the rest of my blood work puts me at 1/37 is what is so concerning. I know that many women go through the same thing and things turn out ok so lets hope that is my case. I know dh would be devestated, but he is staying optimistic right now.
Marina- that is just the way the test works. First you get the NT u/s and go for blood work. I believe they look for 3 different markers. If that is negative you procede to the second set of markers between 15-20 weeks for a final risk assessment. They take the results of each (age, u/s, first blood and second) and assess a high risk or not. If the first assessment was positive they would not have done the second and offered an amnio right away. I am really not sure sure what I want to do. My gut tells me to wait for the 20 week u/s where they look at all the anatomy. If there are abnormal findings on that then I definitely want to know for sure and have no choice but to do the amnio. Right now I am not sure it is worth the risk. I just don't know.

Girl, you do whatever it is you need to do to ease your mind and let go. From reading your posts, it seems you're not sure what that is, so I'll pray you receive some peace about this and are able to make the best decision for you. I can't tell if you're asking what others would do, but if you aren't, just skip down to the next paragraph- if you want to know what I'D do: I would have whatever testing I could possibly have done- even if there was a risk. I feel like "knowing" what could be wrong out weighs any risk of having a miscarriage. That way, if we'd decide to keep the baby, we could be prepared at birth and have services set up with developmental experts.
I am overwhelmed at all of this, and can't help feeling like none of it would work for me- and even if it did, there are SO MANY more obstacles to overcome!!! I wonder what my risks are for having downs, etc...... If anyone knows, feel free to tell me. I'm 35 and DH is 40 (will be 36 & 41 this year).
AND, if I'm blessed enough to get pregnant, do i just schedule an appointment with my regular ob/gyn, or the perinatologist in the same practice?? What did/do you guys do?
LISA: THAT is WEIRD!!!! But somehow, it seems like your body would react that way after carrying a baby.... like it is somehow trying to get back to normal?? What a weekend! Glad it's over and hopefully won't happen again for QUITE some time!
ASF: Just an internal hemmorroid - if anyone has any suggestions on how to treat it, that would be FABULOUS!! I'm calling the RE today to find out our next steps- I'm CD 22, so AF is imminent
Nicole- My main concern is getting an amnio and having a m/c only to find out the baby was completely normal. I do not think I could live with myself if that happened. I have lost 3 already and it took me so long to get pg with this one I just don't think I could handle that. I am still waiting for the genetic counselor to call me back and I am going to seriously inquire about getting a genetic u/s to look for physical characteristics of a downs baby. If there are no physical abnormalities I will not go through with the amnio but if there are I will have no choice but to do it. As far as your risk for having downs child I don't know exactly but from what the dr just told me based on my age alone (34 turning 35 by delivery) I already had a 1 in 200 chance of having a downs baby and would have been considered high risk and offered an amnio. So when you do get pg just be aware you will probably come back with some risk anyway. Hopefully your blood work and u/s wont put you at an even higher risk like mine! Glad to hear you have nothing more serious than an internal hemmroid (although Im sure painful). Time to move on and get started again. Good luck with the RE!

OH! OK, I get it.... I would be more reserved, too. But I am hoping for the best and expecting good news from you! We gotta lift each other up when we can't carry our burdens!
lyly i had the same thing with my first daughter... I had 3 previous m/c's prior to her and all my test said she was mostlikely had downs i had like 1in25 chance i refused the amnio for the same reason if i did it and lost her and she was normal i would never forgive myself and honestly i knew that i wouldnt abort there was no way i had felt her move i couldnt. I had her full term and shes perfectly normal.
Take a look at this web site http://www.mothers35plus.co.uk/down.htm it gives the different risks for different ages. At 36 it says you have a 1 in 307 chance.
I hope the genetic counselor gets back to you soon Lyly. It is not fair for them to make you wait.
Nicole I am pleased they didn't find anything more serious!!
Lyly I feel absolutely the same-do it only if you have to.I wouldn't risk any other way.
Nicole, glad it's nothing serious-but why they didn't take care of this problem right away? When my dad had it done a few month ago, they snipped his internal hemorrhoids right during the procedure and it was done! This is the only way-to get rid of it for good. They also burn of freeze it too, I think, but his was surgicaly removed during colonoscopy.
So ,when you can have your IUI then?

UGH. The RE's office is making me wait until 2/11 to have a consult to figure out what the 'game plan' is. It would take too long for a phone call to talk about all of our options and whether or not to proceed with a laparoscopy to rule out any possibility of endometriosis.
SO! I should be soooooo used to this waiting BS. But I'm not. I was in tears when I got off the phone with the nurse.
AND, I tried to simply cancel my follow up with the GI, but they said I should keep it, even if I decide not to proceed with the endoscopy. And he will want to go over the results and what they did to me. Like I don't already know?? Well, I know I was under, but I'm pretty sure they poked around in there..........
Well girls I got the run around trying to schedule and appt with the genetic counselor because of my insurance but finally found one that accepts it and I have an appt tomorrow at 12. Hopefully I will have some answers on what my options are. I really want to know more about the markers in my blood that put me at risk and what they mean. I'll let you know what happens after my appt.

Lyly, I know the triple test is known to produce a lot of false results. It might be worth asking the GC if it is worth doing it again - that is assuming it was the triple test you had done. Good luck with your appt.
lyly14: GOOD LUCK! I'm so anxious to hear about your appointment- I'll be checking the board this afternoon and evening! I think it's encouraging to hear that the test is known to give false positives
AFM: I am trying to be happy with the fact that my little fertility monitor said I should be starting my period anytime starting today, AND I have NOT had any spotting yet! I have to think that is a very good sign, even if AF arrives. It would be the first "normal" cycle for me in FOREVER (well, for 6 mos)! So, I think I'm going to call the Clearblue Easy people and ask that they send me one of those little cards you can put in your monitor. It then imprints the details of your cycles into/onto it and you send it back to them for analysis. I'd just be curious what it would show..... Have any of you ever tried this, or know of anyone who has tried it? Maybe none of you even knew about it, just thought I'd throw it out there.
Lisa,
Sorry to hear that happen to you, hope that you are feeling better and your twins are well taken care of.
Lyly,
Wow girl I know your worries and wanting to know whats going on. I hope it's nothing bad because most of the times they try to scare you when it's nothing bad. I would try to wait a little longer before doing the amino just to avoid any problems.
But it's your decision and hope that it's nothing bad.
Let us know what you find out today.
Jade,
I love your site I always visit ti everday. Your twins are beautiful they are growing up so fast.
Marina,
what have you find out about your triplets? what are you deciding on?
Sorry this may be long but I am sre you have heard it on the news about the women that had 8 babies, so remember nothing is impossible God is great!
Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, told ABC television that the babies "are doing actually very, very well."
Two of the newborns were initially put on ventilators, but their breathing tubes have been removed.
"Only three babies need some sort of oxygen through the nose right now but they are breathing on their own," Gupta said on "Good Morning America."
The six boys and two girls were born Monday, weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces (0.67 kilograms) and 3 pounds, 4 ounces (1.47 kilograms). The mother's identity has not been released.
The world's first live octuplets were born in March 1967 in Mexico City, but all died within 14 hours, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
The United States' first live octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, three months premature. The tiniest died a week after the birth. The surviving siblings turned 10 in December.
Their parents, Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi, told The Associated Press that they were delighted to hear another mother managed the same feat.
"It's a blessing, truly a blessing," Chukwu said. "We'll keep praying for them."
The parents of the California octuplets and their doctors had been expecting only seven babies. Just five minutes after the first birth, the unexpected eighth baby came out.
"It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven," said Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine and one of 46 doctors, nurses and assistants who delivered the children by Caesarean section.
Doctors said they repeatedly conducted practice sessions in anticipation of the deliveries and were well prepared.
The babies — dubbed with the letters A-through-H — will probably remain in the hospital for at least two months and the mother should be released in a week, said Dr. Karen Maples, chief of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.
The most encouraging news was that the smallest — Baby E, a boy — no longer needed a ventilator. Gupta described him as "very feisty" on Tuesday.
The doctors cautioned that there is still the possibility that one or more of the octuplets may need a breathing tube again, and more dangers await when they begin feeding.
The mother checked into the hospital in her 23rd week of pregnancy and gave birth to the premature babies seven weeks later. Hospital officials would not say whether she had used fertility drugs.
Dr. Richard Paulson, director of the fertility program at the University of Southern California, said the latest births likely resulted from the use of fertility drugs, and that the children could face serious health risks.
"It's a risky decision to try to have all eight babies," said Paulson, who had no role in the delivery. "I would not recommend it under any circumstances, but I respect a parent's decision."
The Bellflower medical center, located about 17 miles southeast of Los Angeles, has an advanced neonatal unit. The most infants previously delivered at the hospital was five, the Los Angeles Times said.
