There is absolutely no pain for the NT test. The dr. just did an U/S through the abdomen. Once she had the angle she wanted, she measured the fluid at the back of the neck. After 14 weeks or so, this area is no longer transparent and can’t be accurately measured. As I mentioned above, they are happy if it’s under 3mm. Usually, they combine these results with a blood test and your age to come up with the baby’s risk factor, although I didn’t do the blood test. A key thing to remember is that this test is only a screening not a diagnostic test. This means that even if your results are high it does not mean that your baby HAS down’s or another condition, just that their risk is higher. At that point, they’d likely recommend further tests. I have heard that one of the downsides of this test is that there is a number of false positives so you have extra stress, but your baby is ultimately fine.

I know it’s scary to face these tests. Try not to anticipate, just take one step at a time. You’re only putting yourself through this because you want all your babies to be healthy and happy and do best by all of them.

If your doctor hasn’t explained everything to you, maybe there’s someone else there that can walk you through everything. At my HMO, they have genetics counselors and talking to one helped us a lot.

Happy Monday Everyone

BarbD- I am so sorry you are going through a tough time with tough decisions. I will be thinking of you during your testing today, and praying everything goes well. I guess I also need to ask my doctor about the NT test this Thursday. Let us know what happens today.

siouxsie- I am glad to hear your ultrasound went well, as well as the testing. I have the what to expect book and it gives me a lot of useful info. I am taking my DH to the doctor's appointment this Thursday. and I hope he does not panic at all.

I have been sick with a bad cold and it has not been fun. The list of approved medicines to take do not work that well, and I am happy I am finally getting over this cold. My doppler is coming today, so I will let y'all know how well it works.

hello all,

I have reading all your posting but not have the energy to post, since we are faced with decisions that I can't bear to think off at this point. Baby C is still not doing well and they are saying they we might loose it so we will see on our next u/s what shows.

I will try to keep you posted but if I don't write for a while just keep us in your toughts.

I hope all you guys are doing well in your pregnancy and I will try really hard to get on and post/read about your updates.

Happy Thursday Everyone!

I went to the doctor today and both babies are doing great. They are both measuring 11 weeks and 6 days, and they were doing flips today. I was giving this doctor's office one last chance today, and I decided I am not happy with them at all. The Midwife who saw me was short with her answers and really did not examine me again. When I asked about the NT scan she acted shocked that I even asked and then told me they do not do that. She said the specialist will do that, but I don't see them until 20 weeks. They just seem to brush me off whenever I have a question, and never give me a direct answer.

My RE gave me a referral and I called them right when I got home, and I have an appointment with them next Tuesday.

On a weird note I lost 8 lbs, but the midwife did not seem concerned.

Molly,

Sounds like everything is going great for you. Hope the new dr. is a better fit. Just so you know, they can't so the NT after 14 weeks or so since they need the skin to be translucent -- after that point it turns more opaque and they can't measure the liquid.

Thanks siouxsie! Yep I am hoping since I see this new doctor right before the 13th week begins that I can get the NT test done. Is it important to get the NT test done before you get other testing.

I see you and I both are at 12 weeks. Two more weeks to go, and you will be past the 14 week. Then you can relax a bit more!

molly i honestly would not sweat the nt scan. I had it with first dd and it came back likely to have downs. She doesnt. I refuses the nt with 2nd dd and shes fine. They are all just scans there is not certainty. So many people get false reading on their nt scans

Started prenatal yoga Friday. It was very nice. I have not done yoga for severla years; this was very gentle and relaxing.

Had my last RE appt. yesterday. I was glad, because I woke up w/ spotting. This was the first time for me. The baby looked fine -- we saw spine and rib cage, fingers and very active kicking knees. It's 6.7 cm. Amazing. She found no sign of blood, so thinks it's okay, but I will also check with my OB. Tested my progesterone and it was good (37.8) -- she likes it over 20. But, I'll take it one more week due to spotting.

Unless OB wants to see me sooner, no appts until 5/7.

Hope all of you are well.

siouxsie- Yoga sounds like fun. I need to see if I can fit that into my schedule. I am sorry about the bleed scare, but so happy to hear everything turned out alright for you. I bet you are happy next week will be 14 weeks for you, and everything is looking great for you.

I went to my new doctor today, and I love him. He examined me and told me all the risk with twins, and made me feel very comfortable. I did have quiet a scare at the doctors though. They did a urine sample and did a pregnancy test to check for pregnancy, and it came back negative, and so they did another one, and it came back negative. I had a to wait to get an ultrasound for a bit, and every worse fear went through my head. The ultrasound showed both babies with good heartbeats measuring 12 weeks and 5 days. The doctor told me not to worry about the pregnancy test, but I am still super worried. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? He said as long as the ultrasound shows to healthy babies everything is all right.

I have my NT test next week, and as I was pre registering on the website I noticed it said risk of miscarriage. I did not think NT test had a risk of miscarriage. Can anyone tell me the risk?

Glad you like your new doctor. it does make a big difference.

I'd check with your doc's office about the NT and be sure that's what they're scheduling you for opposed to a CVS or amnio.

You can read more about the NT here:
http://americanpregnancy.org/prenatalte ... creen.html
"Except for the discomfort of drawing blood, there are no known risks or side effects associated with the First Trimester screen. There is a 5% false positive rate for the test. Parents should be aware of the possibility of receiving abnormal results and then finding, after further testing, that the baby is normal."

Molly, I have had several NT scans and they are only ultrasounds. There is one that measures it through the amniocentisis and that test does carry the miscarriage risks. So which one are you having?

I just got out of the hospital, I was in there for four days due to high blood pressure and vomiting. My blood pressure went down on its own and I am taking meds for the vomiting. So far it just seems one big hill to climb after another.

siouxsie, my new DR's tell me that spotting in your first trimester is ok unless you start bleeding heavy with cramps. I hope all is well now.

Hi October moms-to-be!
Wanted to know if it was okay for me to join you?!
I recognize a few of you from the Feb FET board. I think I was one of the last to get my BFP from that group and most of you were already over here by that time!
Since then I've been silently reading along and following your stories and have finally found the courage to join you here on the other side....

I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and to sharing this incredible time in our lives.

Dear Barb - Sorry to hear about all you have been going through, and of your recent stay in the hospital. Do hope you are recuperating at home for the time being, and are feeling better soon.

Hope everyone else is starting to feel better as we enter the 2nd trimester!

xx summer

Welcome Summer Baby! It looks like you are a week behind me, so I guess you are due the 2nd week of October? How are you feeling?

BarbD, I am so sorry to hear about your hospital stay, and I am glad you are doing better. Have you had an ultrasound lately. You are getting near the 13th week, so some of the symptoms should be going away soon.

I am going to call about the NT test and make sure they are just giving me a scan, and I will let you guys know.

Hope everyone is doing well.
