summerbaby - I am taking a pre natal that is all natural with the Algae DHA in it and it has been great. And it is only one pill, it is PreNexa. i had problems with other vitamins that required the 2 pills and was really sick, but this is the wonder vitamin for me.

We just got back the results of the amnio. All is normal! It's a girl!

siouxsie- Yay I am so happy to hear it is a girl!.
My anatomy scan is this Friday, so hopefully I will find out the gender of both.
My doctor did say I have placenta previa but it is only covering half the the cervix, and I have no bleeding. They are hoping it clears up as the baby grows. I will write more later.

siouxsie - so happy for both you and DH to hear that you got such good news after your amnio! Fantastic! Congratulations on your baby girl! How sweet. Really wonderful for you guys to get such good news.

Hey SummerBaby- I was just wondering what made you decide to get the amino ? My quad screen came back positive for down syndrome, but my specialist thinks it is because I am carrying twins. I then had a sequential screen and I am having the second part of my NT today. Hopefully we will know from that if I will need an amino, but I am super nervous about it since there is risk involved.

Hi Molly,
My ob/gyn recommended doing the diagnositic test, instead of relying on the screening test results, so we can know for sure, rather than just having a probability, if the baby is okay or not.
We are aware of the risk and are doing the test as late as possible, which is supposed to minimize the risk even further, but it still makes me nervous.
I'm looking forward to getting it done and over with, hopefully with no complications and good results.

I hope everyones doing great.
I am having a tough time. I got a call late last week from my Perinatologist for our NT results. Turns out that my NT test indicates that we have a 3% chance of one or both of the twins having down syndrome. Now they are suggesting a detailed anatomy scan and the Amnio.
I am a little wigged out to say the least. I am not sure how we will deal with a baby or two with down syndrome. I know that sounds terrible, but I know myself. I had a tough time dealing with my little boy having reflux desease and always throwing up his formula.
I go tomorrow for the per-amnio test and we get to decide if to do the Amnio at the same time. I think I am going to do it. Then we make the two week wait again.
Summerbaby - Have you guys decided what you are going to do if the Amnio results are positive?
Molly - I totally understand the nervousness regarding the scan. I guess I going to decide tomorrow on the fly depending on the anatomy scan. I've also got Placenta Pervia, my Dr. says it should go away with time.

Hope your NT went well. Let us know how it and the anatomy scan went for you and what we should expect with our scans. I’m scheduled for mine at 20 weeks. I’ve heard it’s pretty amazing.
My RE also said I have placenta previa. She was not concerned at all and said it almost always move later in the pregnancy. I will double check with my OB at my upcoming appointment this Friday.
If you have access to a good genetic counselor, I’d recommend it. Ours gave us lots of information about the risks of birth defects and the various tests. But, they were very careful to present the information neutrally and we ultimately made the decision to test on our own. Our HMO also advised us to speak to a social worker. She was very compassionate and a great listener and something similar could be helpful for you as you go through the stress of this decision making.

Firstly, keep in mind that 3% chance still means that there’s 97% chance that everything is fine. I’ve heard with twins, it can be more difficult for them compile the results (as Molly references above) so that could be a large part of your assessment.
Based on my past history, I had 5% chance of a nural tube defect plus the regular down’s risk for my age group (1%) plus the other primary chromosomal issues, and still everything came back fine. I wasn’t really aware of what an enormous weight I felt until after it was removed. Now I feel great and like I can truly celebrate.
To reduce risk, I choose a perinatologist with a lot of experience (27 years) and rested in bed for the remainder of the day. I got as much info as I could from our genetics counselor, and probably more than I should have from the internet. (There are studies out there that quote a much lower risk for the procedure.)
Personally, I didn’t spend a ton of time predicting what our response would be to a non-favorable result, except, of course, to acknowledge that we’d be devastated. I felt that we would need the complete information in order to make a decision. My last pregnancy was diagnosed with ancephaly. While it was possible that the baby may have made it to term, there was no chance of her/him living more than a few hours so we choose to terminate. In this scenario, we felt this was the most humane choose for the child and for us. For a different situation, our response would likely have been very different. At the minimum, we would have had more time to prepare for the extra resources and support we’d need to raise a child with special needs.
One warning: be vocal if you don’t want to know the gender. When she called me with results, she told me the gender, then said, Whoops. I forgot to ask if you wanted to know.” I actually did want to know, but it would have been a bummer if I was looking forward to the surprise.

Siouxsie- Your anatomy scan will be amazing, and you will love every minute of it. How did you find a genetic counselor? I have a perinatologist who gives me my numbers. How is your pregnancy going?

I can only second what you both said, and say again that it is a very personal decision to have the test done and then, once you get the results, to decide what to do or what not to do, or how best to celebrate the good results you hope to get when the test comes back that way.
Joannet - I guess we have a lot of thinking, soul-searching to do to decide what is best for us and for our babies.
Molly - glad to hear all went well with your anatomy scan and that you enjoyed it so much. Big congratulations on the 2 girls! Wow, seems one mostly hears about boy/girl fraternal twins and not so often about same sex, or am I totally wrong about that?

Our pre-amnio scan went well. The test will be next Wednesday. Was nice to see the baby again, moving around, doing its thing...He said the baby was in a good position to do the amnio (off to the side) and it will hopefully stay that way and not decide to lie flat next week, or we will have to reschedule. The doctor who will do the test is the same one who did my fibroid surgery 5 years ago and I was so surprised and impressed that he remembered me, as I haven't seen him since.
He also said that I have to remind him again next week that we don't want to find out the gender and he will put that on the form....
Hope everyone is doing well. We are almost to the halfway point. Hard to believe, isn't it?

Thank you to all of you for your kind words and thoughts.
Well the amnio went very well on Monday. I must say that after all of my fussing and worring that my Perinatologist made me very comfortable with our decisions on Monday. Turns out that they did not age my embryos correctly for the NT test. Our new percentage for Downs is 1 in 96 or just less than 1% chance.
The anatomy scan showed no signs that either of our babies have markers for Downs either, so my Perinatologist says not to read too much into the results. Also I learnt from her that the studies and statistics were created from individuals with Caucasian decent and may not apply exactly to my babies who are a bit African American, Cherokee Indian, Chinese and Indian all at the same time. Also she said that with twins the results are a bit more unrealiable.
We are praying for the best.

Summerbaby - glad to hear that your pre-amnio scan went well. The amnio was very simple for us, even with the two babies. The hardest part was getting Baby A to stay still so that the Dr. could insert the needle. Baby B was a very cooperative little bundle.
Siouxsie - I agree with Molly the anatomy scan was amazing. Just seeing all the little bones in such detail was quite amazing. Laying still for an hour was no fun, but it was the best show ever. One of my bundles was even sucking a thumb....it was the most precious experience.
I totally agree about with all of you on getting the Amnio and knowing what to do with the results. I am so attached to these tigers already.....
Well we have decided to put off worrying about the results and deciding what to do until we have the results or something to worry about.
Ok ladies, thank you for being there for me, when I was a complete basket case......
